great game (but one crash bug)

I just discovered this gem (in 2026, yes). Very addictive! Quick to start up a new game and then I get instantly sucked into the old "just one more turn" loop ... and then a few "just one more game before I really have to go to bed". Not unlikely to be my favorite new game of this year and a game I will keep playing for many years.

Not a type of game I would normally notice, being a bit abstract (no randomness, not very historic, and too obvious rock-paper-scissors mechanics...). Only reason I have it is that it was included in some Humble Bundle many years ago (was it around 2014?). Also included the Windows version, but I can't get that to run in any of my (virtual) Windows machines (it officially supports only Windows 7 and Vista, and I have neither). The Android version runs on one of my old Android tablets and on one of my older Android phones (that I revived just so that I could use it to play this game). Unfortunately (or fortunately?) it does not run on my current Android phone (too new version of the OS, I guess?).

Sad to see it not available anywhere. Would have happily paid a few $ to get an updated version to run on my desktop computer (Linux port, please!). I did manage to install the old Android version in an old version of the Android Studio Emulator (had to search for a bit to find a version that was old enough to support emulating 32-bit ARM Android). It runs a bit slow though. Playable, but not as fun as playing on my old tablet. And it looks like the desktop version of the game has some more modes of play that may be fun?

Almost never enjoy mobile games. I played many, but rarely for more than 5 minutes. This is really exceptionally good for a mobile game.

There is a crash bug though... It crashes sometimes. Mostly during my turns, but I saw it once during an AI turn as well. Took some time before I noticed what the issue was. When a region is cut into smaller parts, and every hex in one smaller regions is occupied by a unit or building, so that there is no room for placing a new city, the app instantly crashes. Luckily, most of the time, it is possible to re-launch the app and Continue, as it is auto-saved frequently (once that did not work because the save was lost for some reason). Not that I think there will ever be a patch for this game. It is a bit annoying, but infrequent enough to not really matter, and I learned to avoid attacking in a way that triggers it (which does make the game slightly more difficult, as sometimes it would be a great move to cut off some hexes that all contain an enemy unit!).

I noticed the old manual, that I only found now thanks to a link someone posted in the folder for the Windows version of this game, says that Windows XP is also supported. Will make another attempt to get it to run in my virtual XP machine then. It may be some other dependency that is lacking.

Game manual from 2009 on the Wayback Machine (as it is no longer online, or did it just move?):
