I don't see an "Opponents wanted" section that is usually present for other games.

Where do people usually find opponents for PBEM?

There is a Discord that people use, I don't use Discord however. I think there's a link to it on the Shadow Empire reddit.

However, after a little over a year of hosting PBEM games, I have ended up with my own curated Slack channel of about a dozen players, who all share the most important quality of a PBEM player: reliability. Everyone on the Slack has played more than one game and been vouched for by other players. I didn't set out to create this condition, it just sort of happened. My first game suffered from player dropouts. Now allegedly, every player I'm in contact with has at least 500 hours.

I am currently hosting a 6 player game that was the test case for the 8 player game I had hoped to run after the Republica release. After overwhelming demand, it looks like I will be generating both a T3 and T4 game. I am just waiting for the GOG version to catch up with patching as Steam doesn't allow you to mod the player count.

If you have any interest in games or being put in contact with consistent players, send me a PM.

Agreed, reliability is key. I have been involved with a great group of folks for the past 5+ years; & a few others, as well, as time has passed.
Per the GOG updates; it is current through v1.31.18 (beta 1.31q), while the latest beta v1.31t can only be applied to the Matrix & Steam versions, sadly. So, waiting for another official update for the GOG version (which I own because I like GOG & want to support Vic) will take some time.

I don't do Discord or Reddit. It has really limited my pbem options. Oh well. I have no intention of trying them. Both look like a big mess. I have plenty of fun vs the AI. If I start spanking the AI in a game too badly, I just rotate to a different game for six months+. Then I go back to it, having forgotten everything about it I once knew. I am about ready to start playing Dominions again. I looked at it the other day and realized I had no clue what I was doing. Great fun! I do wish the opponents wanted section here was more active.

Opponent reliability is indeed the most important thing.

I've wasted probably hundreds of hours on games that went nowhere because opponents either surrendered quickly or disappeared..
