Rifle Brigade Efficacy

Hey everyone, I am completely brand new and playing the tutorial scenario of Velikie Luki.

As such I set the combat info to 7 with a 4 second delay so I could try to understand how combat is resolved. I am aware there are many mitigating factors.

The casualties if combat seem incredibly light. Particularly casualties caused by Small Arms squads. Attack after attack after attack of Rifle brigade on Rifle brigade and hardly a single casualty inflicted.

In the end 226 "Soviet Rifle Squad 42's", each with 4 Mosin-Nagants, 3 SVT 40s, 1 DP LMG, and 1 PPSh-41 SMG, caused not one German death and injured a single German soldier. That's 2,034 Russians presumably advancing and firing their weapons when coming into contact with the enemy. Losses in total were very low at 20 Germans and 112 Soviets. Most of this was from mortar and howitzer fire.

So my question is, what is the math behind a Rifle Squad attack? Why are they so ineffective?

The exact combat that took place was the 21st Guards Rifle Division of the Soviet 3rd Shock Army vs the German 2/83rd Infantry Division.

Thank you for helping me to understand the game.
