Yugoslavia coup

Most Axis players invade Yugoslavia as soon as possible because they know a coup is coming. This is Hitler anticipating a coup that was only executed because Hitler forced the pact on the King and only happened days after the announcement. The variable of when the coup happens only further incentives the Axis player to invade a pro-Axis country as soon as possible.

I propose a "what if" option to restore uncertainty to this event. Instead of the Allied "event" being automatic, give the coup event a chance to fail, say 10-20%. But instead of a random coup date, gradually allow it to build to mobilization like the other minor Axis allies did, increasing random % each turn starting in Jan 1941. When Yugoslavia reaches "mobilization" level (90%+), then the coup event is triggered. Obviously, the Axis and Allies can spend mpp's on diplomacy to try to influence this to happen sooner or later.

Just an idea to return uncertainty to the event, give both sides some hesitation, and allow the event to play out. Otherwise, the event really has no value, because the Axis player is just going to invade before, and the Allies will fund it because otherwise it becomes an instant Axis minor ally.

What's up with this forum? I posted this just a couple days ago and it disappeared, not showing up in the 1st page. I had to search for it, even though it is a new post.

(Actually I thought this post was still showing near the top when I looked earlier today, as I was thinking of a reply.)

Some players, myself included, allow the coup to happen so that the Axis doesn't have to declare war. Yugo is easy enough to beat one turn later. USSR gets a mobilisation bump if Axis declares war and I think USA gets another bump when Yugo surrenders. Pros and cons for both approaches of course.

Interesting historical note - the Soviets were preparing an uprising in Yugo to counter the Axis but the British organised their uprising first.

My issue is that waiting can be irksome because of the random coup date that makes it a hassle for the Axis, and why I think it pushes Axis players to ignore history and just invade as soon as possible, so those units can then get to the Russian border in time for Barbarossa. Any negative impact for the Axis in Russian mobilization doesn't really matter as the Axis will likely attack within 2-3 turns of taking out Yugoslavia anyway.

Hence my suggestion to restore an element of surprise and value to the event.
