Travel time...

Why is travel time for Jap ships from Japan -> Truk set to 11 days?
According to the travel log for Zuikaku 5-7 days was enough.
All high speed warships were in other words able to reach Truk in 5 days if need be!
I don't think US warships needed more than 11 days to get from Pearl to Noumea either.
An extra 6 days delay could mean a big difference in UV, so are there any reasons for not using the historical accurate time?
Zuikakus log:
28 December 1942:
Arrive at Yokosuka.
4 January 1943:
Arrive at Truk.
7 January 1943:
Depart Truk for Japan.
12 January 1943:
Arrive at Oita, then shifts to Kure.

Search the net for 'TROM' - Tabular Record of Movement. For the IJN you can find them at
http://www.combinedfleet.com/kaigun.htm .
For your convenience, Zuikaku's TROM is here:
http://www.combinedfleet.com/Zuikak.htm
Have to check my bookmarks at home for the site with USN TROMs...
Hope this helps,

I brought up this travel time subject back in May (I Think it was)
The basic answer is that it is not the exact travel time between Japan/Truk or Pearl/Noumea but instead it is giving the commander warning that the units are being made available and will arrive by X-date
Just did a search on my question back then...

Yes, that's true - but that is very unflexible.
In an emergency situation ships lying at anchor in Tokyo or Pearl could be ordered to sail within 24 hours.
There are several issues with sending ships to/from the theater as well:
Damaged and undamaged ships all spend the same amount of time on the trip.
Heavily damaged ships are returned directly from Truk or Noumea, they don't have to sail home. This is an especially big advantage for the US player. Heavily damaged and sinking ships at Noumea can be saved by pushing the 'return to Pearl' button. A Jap fleet blockading the port don't have a chance at stopping them.
My suggestion is that ships should have to sail in and out of the map to get in/out of the theater. Could decide which zone you wanted the ships to arrive in depending in the actual situation. Entry outside of Noumea, further south etc.
This would make it impossible to 'beam' ships back in sinking condition as well.
Not sure about the rest of you, but that's the kinda solution I would liketo see

PzB, I agree. In order to avoid 'beaming' sinking ships in UV, I suggest that the 'sent' button should only be activated if the floatation damage is below a certain threshold, perhaps 50% or even lower. Then the ships should form a computer-controlled TF and sail to the edge of the map in order to get home.
Furthermore, it would be nice to have the same 'sail to/from map edge' function and computer-controlled routine convoys bringing in supplies, fuel and reinforcements instead of 'instaporting' the stuff into Noumea/Truk and (partly) Brisbane. It is impossible to blockade Noumea for example - I have just finished a campaign against the AI where I tried to capture it. I owned everything around it, had Goro (the base right beside Noumea) built up to level 9 airbase and level 3 port, cramped with supplies, fuel, everything that can fly and with heavy bombardment TFs shuttling between those two hexes - and had almost all my ground forces at Noumea - but hell, no chance. Each time I thought I had the 2:1 margin the US forces magically had received ground reinforcements themselves - right through the tight air and naval blockade (thousands of submarines on transport mission perhaps?) You can't even starve them out, much less close down the enemy airbase if the Allieshas ample engineers and base forces. Okay, I won auto-victory nevertheless, but what I really wanted was to satisfy my ambition to capture Noumea... Well, we will not have these problems in WitP.

Not at all.
For USN ships, check out
http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/ . No TROMs, but info on movements in short 'ship biographies'.

I had a Jap carrier heavily damaged. It made it back to Truck without sinking- whew!
The I Returned it to Japan
It sank on the way and my opponent received 300 victory points
