Apologies if there is an obvious answer that I am missing all this time

Is there an indicator of the the length of a path that has two waypoints or more (i.e. start - WP1 - WP2 - Endpoint).

Try F2 and then go to waypoint using the arrows on the pop up menu. That has the distance info.
