Japanese CV Radar from Refits?

I know this game has been around forever buts what's the reasoning behind only the Shokaku and Zuikaku getting Radar upgrades in mid 1942 and all the other carriers which were historically sunk not having them available until 1943.

One would reason that had they not been sunk at midway or engaged in the battle of midway they could have done a full refit with radar included in 1942.

Just asking as it makes no sense other than ohh they got sunk give them a hypothetic upgrade in 1943.

Like the reason they didnt do a full refit before Midway was due to the Midway operation....so one should reason that if in our what-if Pacific War worlds we dont rush an operation in mid 1942 they could also been refitted with radar in yard period at that time.

Just some thoughts on unless someone has evidence that Japan didnt have the radars available or for some reason couldnt figure out how to install them on the old CVs.....

There are many thing one could argue should not be in the game, for instance like the IJN air force restructuring and all those withdrawal mid game but the game is based on historical events. But as you pointed out some decisions where made triggered by some other events that probably will never happen in the game so as long as the game is set up to be played along these lines you will always these arguments. The maxim 'No plan survives first contact with the enemy' is correct and is something I've raised before.

I'd like to see a free game version were you can build anything based somehow on your basic economy.

Back your specifics, all these thing you mentioned can be edited. Not sure if you can do it during a game others may be able to answer that.

Good points - in my mod, I did what I thought was plausible for the level of tech in my mod, and most Jap CV and important ships have the same date for updates deliberately, so you, as a player, have to prioritise what is important. Or, in the case of a damaged ship, just take the moment. I think it's working quite well.

You have to think this through in context with the reality that you are choosing for your mod. Historically, IJ was critically short of ANY and ALL radio related parts. Part of this was due to the Junta's reluctance to put the country on a war economy until late '43 ... part was due to the high demand for consumer radios at this time ... part was due to incredible miss-management of resources ... et al. The in-game timeline of radar to the Midway units is as good a guess as any as to when they might have gotten radar.

You have to understand that the Junta was ARMY based. Thus, this is why/how almost the entire IJ Navy starts the war already needing boiler furnace cleans/rebuilds. Seriously. In my mod ALL IJN and 50% of the merchant ships have an upgrade added by 3/42 mostly to represent the boiler maintenance. If you have read Herb's AAR's, you already know that the IJN boilers were low pressure compared to the allies AND lacked a lot of the daily maintenance enhancements. Thus, annual shipyard boiler cleans were a must.

This continues to the electronics like radar. Radar to the Army was NOT a big deal, and in WWII no army made huge use of radar. But, for the Navy, radar was huge which the Junta never really put any focus on it to the detriment of the Navy. So, that is the second issue you need to deal with. If the Junta stays the same, it is hard to rationalize any improvement in radar ....

Experimental (one) IJN radar was installed on BB Huyga in summer of 1942.

More prorotypes came in 1943, but it was not until 1944, when Japanese has anything really useful in use.

Yeah, some questionable decisions. One of most important things of a game like this is to decide in what History let in and what should not affect the game.

Pax is correct saying that radar electronics where not readily available for all ships at same time, What would make sense is to have major combatants have radar first. Not at same time but staggered, one class each month or so - ideally instead the code should also produce radars and then if a battleship/cruiser is damaged the player might decide that ship to get a radar instead of other battleship/cruiser class but it is not possible so the scenario developer have to decide-
What do not make sense is to have some heavy cruisers and battleship to only have radars in mid 44 when subchasers have them in md 43.

Another is forced retirement of Thai Army. It should have been tied to the Japanese war fortunes.

The reason I brought this up is the Shokaku class CVs get a radar with the mid 1942 refit so if this is accurate then the Japanese navy at least had some sets available starting in mid 1942.

Also in some readings i have done its stated the CVs sent to midway werent given full refits due to the rushed timeline of the operation.

I dont know if anyone has any other information or not but it would see if the other 2 fleet CVs got radar mid 1942 one could reason the Akagi/Kaga an such would/could have been given radar if they had undergone a full refit instead of moving off to midway.

Shokaku was heavily damaged in the Coral Sea battle and Zuikaku lost so many planes she had to sit in port waiting for more to be produced. That would give both these carriers lots of yard time if even crude radars were available.

The Canadian navy went through this phase - with no domestic electronics industry it had to wait for radars from the US and Britain (mostly the latter). The sets they got as hand-me-downs were big clunky vacuum tube things that could overheat and blow a tube or two if they operated for too many hours, so they were used sparingly - at night, in fog, and when enemy ships/subs were spotted nearby. In addition, the first ones did not have rotating antennae so the radar had blind spots where masts and superstructure got in the way. I imagine the IJN's early radars had the same problems.

Very much so. The Japanese dominance in electronics in the postwar era is well known but during the war they still labored in the dark ages. The quality of Japanese components was so poor that most vacuum tubes failed inspection, and even those that passed their checks had an average failure time of as little as 100 hours. For a system with 40 tubes, this meant an average time to failure of about two or three hours. This led to the temptation to limit the time the radars were in actual use to curtail breakdowns and overheating.

Japanese radar procedures were also deficient. Captured Japanese technicians reported that early warning radars were often shut down when Allied aircraft came within ten miles, because of fear that the radar emissions would provide a homing point. This prevented vectored interception of Allied raids. The Japanese Navy likewise ordered ships to keep their radars shut down when under radio silence until 1944, which made them useless for early warning.

I would assume they have factored deficiencies or effectiveness of the radar into the game as you do see each radar system has different ratings aside from just range.

In all reality the effectiveness of the set should be built into the game stats/mechanics.

My question was purely if given yard time why the other main KB carriers would not have gotten radar when the Shokaku class which were in the yard in mid 1942 for various/whatever reasons did.

I again fall back to it seems there is no legit reason the hypothetical in game mid 1942 refit for those CVs don't include radar.

There are lots of hints that sets were not available. After the raid on Tokyo, land based sets would have had a priority. There's a good chance the two put on the carriers were prototypes, not yet in manufacture.

From doing abit more research at least 3 sets were put on ships confirmed in early/mid 1942.

Interestingly 2x BBs Ise/Hyuga and CV the Shokaku was the first CV to get one.

I read someone else had changed a mod where they did 2 Japanese CVs per month to refit with radar---i think this is probably the most rational way to do this that matches with possible historical(not sunk at midway)....also not sure why those 2 BBs dont get a refit until 1943 that then gives them more AA and radar....they should probably have a early 1942 refit for Ise to add radar and a mid 1942 refit for Hyuga. In all honestly from looking at the refits....the 1943 refit should just have its date moved up to 1942 as its mainly just adding the radar and alittle AA.

I would guess a more realistic BB/CV refit timeline would look something like:
Shokaku class as game- 6/42 to start refit
Akagi/Kaga- 7/42 to start refit w/radar
Hiryu/Sorya- 8/42 to start refit w/radar
Ise- 4/42 to start refit w/radar
Hyuga-6/42 to start refit w/radar

leave others as listed in game.

I think that is an aggressive schedule for deployment of radar. Those sets in 42 were experimental and the Japanese were not convinced of the value of radar until 1943 when production on additional sets began.

It sounds simple enough to install radar - clear a small compartment, stick in the set and scope or paper trace, put an antenna on the mast and run some wire. Simple, right? But---that set used a lot of electricity which would require another power generator or an increase in the capacity of the existing generators. That takes space, wiring and electrical panels. Then there's the heat generated by the set - electronics don't like heat - so there has to be at least ventilation by fan, if not air conditioning.

I used to wonder why upgrading AA guns from .50 caliber to 20 mm took a week until I saw a documentary about the ammo storage, clipping rooms (to fill the ammo clips), spare parts, etc. It isn't just the equipment - it's all the changes needed to make the equipment work!

Yes a month is ok.

I would start with carrier with Air search radars then as production ramps up much more ships get them in an exponential scale.

Note also the difference between anti air radar and anti surface radar.

I would not put the Shokakus as the first carrier to get them but Akagi and Kaga as elite first carrier division - we need to think around historicity here since Midway do not necessarily happen . then Shokaku and Hiryu/Soryu. No player will put them all in shipyard at same time so probably will take more then 4 months to upgrade those 4.

I believe 42 is too early for expanded deployment of ship borne radar. 1942 saw the testing of prototypes that went into production later in 43 and were not deployed to the fleet until the end of 1943.

Japanese inferiority in radar technology was the result of Japan's lack of depth in its technical base and of neglect by the military and naval leadership. One visiting German professor noted in 1938 that "Japanese universities resembled senior high and vocational schools, because what was to be studied in the university was established in advance. Under such circumstances there was little freedom within the university, nor much freedom for academic instruction" (Nakagawa 1993). The same professor observed that Japanese manufacturers were remarkably uniform in their methodology and use of materials, reflecting a mindset which hindered innovation. Recruiting technical personnel was difficult for the armed services, and there was one six-year period when not a single graduate of the engineering department of Tokyo Imperial University volunteered for Navy duty. The Navy began the Pacific War with a corps of technical officers, but the number graduated each year did not reach 100 until 1940. Technical officers were looked down on by line officers, and by November 1942 they were absorbed into the regular officer corps to make up the shortage of combat personnel.

The Japanese Navy was aware of the potential of radar. The Japanese claimed to have built their first cavity magnetron as early as 1937, and by 1939 JRC had produced a 10cm 500W cavity magnetron. The British did not produce a comparable design until February 1940. However, lack of interest and support meant that Japan quickly lost its lead in this crucial technology. The first inklings of the military potential of radar did not come to the Japanese until late 1939, which was very late in the game. Early experiments in the use of Doppler interference detectors to detect aircraft proved to be a technological dead end. Although the chief of the Armaments Section of the Navy General Staff, Yanagimoto Ryusaka, insisted that the Navy could not go to war without radar,and the Navy Ministry instituted a crash program of radar development on 2 August 1941, the Navy's Electrical Research Department, which was responsible for radar, had grown to just 300 staff by August 1943.

By the end of the war, quality control on Japanese electronics was so poor that often only one tube in 100 actually worked, and even those that passed inspection had a mean time to failure of as little as 100 hours. For a system with 40 tubes, this meant a mean time to failure of just two or three hours. The shortage of nickel, used in heater filaments, had to be alleviated by purchasing nickel coins at Hong Kong and melting them down.

Interservice rivalry hurt the Japanese radar effort, just as it hampered so many other aspects of Japan's war effort. The Army ordered its radar group, at the Tama Army Technical Institute, to divulge none of its research results to the Navy group, and the Navy soon reciprocated. The Army even produced a small number of its own shipborne radar (Tase-1) for Army transports and submarines. There were 37 Navy and 27 Army fixed early warning radars in Japan in 1945, but at least 11 radar sites had Navy and Army radars practically side by side, yet there were only two fixed radars in all Shikoku. This duplication of effort was compounded by the tendency to spend resources on long-term projects that could not be ready in time to be used during the war, and on such wild schemes as a microwave "death ray" to fry bomber crews. The latter project was partially a product of desperation, pushed by researchers who knew the war could not be won by conventional means. The "death ray" succeeded in killing rabbits at a range of 5 meters, but was utterly impractical for bringing down bombers. Nor was the Japanese radar effort helped by the social gulf between physicists and engineers. Japanese engineers were poorly trained in antenna theory, crucial to understanding radar performance, but the Japanese physicists who had such knowledge were largely ignorant of electronics.

Inferiority in radar electronics was compounded by the failure of the Japanese to develop the command and control required to make the best use of radar information. By 1944, American ships began to be equipped with combat information centers (CICs) equipped to process radar data and vector fighters accordingly. Japanese development of a comparable capability was hampered by Japanese weakness in aircraft communications systems. Japanese radar procedures were also faulty: Japanese prisoners of war reported that Japanese early warning radars were shut down when Allied aircraft came within ten miles, lest the radar provide a homing point. This prevented vectored interception of Allied raids. The Japanese Navy likewise ordered ships to keep their radars shut down when under radio silence until 1944, which eliminated their value for early warning.

The sinking of radar ship Yamakibo Maru at Truk in November 1943 was a disaster for Japanese radar deployment. Much valuable equipment and personnel were lost.

yep saw several of the articles on poor performance/uptime.

The standard game scenario and from what i can read historical refits of the Shokaku class were the first CVs to get radar installed during the mid 1942 refit---which the game accurately represents.

As well 2x BBs were given the experimental radar in early 1942 thus my reason to say they should be added to the radar list for 1942 upgrades.

So im not sure why Japanese radar on key capital ships should be none until 1943 as the key capital ships were already getting it historically from about april 1942 onwards.

The Kaga and Akagi historically were delayed the mid 1942 refit due to preparations and then the launch of midway operations during which they sunk.....so just based on the evidence available i would reason they would have been next in line for radar after the Shokaku class. Even given limited radar availability/resources the 1 month delay between each upgrade timeline should make up available the next limited set of radars.

Radar for sure would have continued to roll out to the fleet carriers had they not virtually all been sunk at midway is I think very obvious.

Now effectiveness of the radar should be shown in the game values of the radar/range and pretty sure all the radars in game have an effectiveness number which i would think the japanese radar is lower but i havent messed with or looked into it much.

My understanding of the way that radar works in the game is that they only work in the hex that they are in but if the ranger is greater than the hex then the chance of detection is increased by every multiple of the hex size.
