Allied ships in the Truk area

G'day folks,
Is there an intrusion zone around Truk? I am currently playing one of the longer games against the AI, (I'm the Allies) when decided to send a surface group deep into Japanese waters. I thought I would get my task force within flying distance of my float planes, however no matter what I tried the TF would turn back during the turn. I tried all settings Patrol/ret, and don;t react to en. toggles, but to no avail keep return home destination. just couldn't get to stay 7 to 8 hexes away from Truk so I could mount a recon next turn. Has anyone else experienced this at all?

Sounds like you are at the limits of your TF's endurance. When a TF reaches bingo fuel (remaining fuel is just enough to get it back to home port) it will automatically turn itself around and head home. To correct this problem either send a replenishment TF to rendevous with your surface TF or choose a home port closer to the action so it can remain on station longer.

Hi Gus, I tried reassigning home port to a an area east of truk, also the TF comprised of capital and cruisers I don't think endurance is a problem, because they are more than happy to hang around just outside that area, I am talking 8 to 9 days later

Do you have any air cover, ie carrier tf along for the ride? As truk may be stacked with air power and your surface tf commander may not want to commit to closing with in lba range..

I just tried a test with the UV tutorial sceanrio and put both USN surface TF's on patrol within 8 hexes of Truk and they remained on station. The interesting part for me was that they remained on station even after they reached bingo fuel, i.e. they bled their bunkers dry. I have owned this game from the moment it was released and I am just learning this now . So please ignore my original post
AFAIK there is no intrusion zone around Truk or any other base in UV.

yes I have 2 carrier fleets around but, I didn't want them too close to Truk. I guess the range of the float planes is too short for the comfort of the TF cmdr. just on a point you made, does the game AI allow the ship captains to make better decisions than me

I must admit I was just fiddling with the idea of using my battlegroup's float plane to recce Truk, more curiostity than good tactics, really just learning the game mechanics so I can take on a PBEM game.
Hi Gus, it appears my AI captains are smarter than me. I have decided to build a base on Nauru.and tyry something different there is plenty of time.
