Hi guys,
I have cable modem access and I am having trouble downloading any faster than 40 kb/s. Is there a faster ftp site around to download from?
Games domain is not functioning.
I have tried edome and matrixgames.com

Took me 24 hours but it was worth it. Sit back and watch CNN and the US kick some Afghan butt and the next day you will be a player.

Yah, I shouldn't complain about a 2 hour download then...
In response to "kick Afgan butt" I would prefer the "Terrorist butt", and perhaps the "Afghan Government, for harbouring Bin Ladin", but not the Afghan bystanders.
A small but important difference.

The difference is acknowledged but the terrorists are still in afghanistan and I think my intent was clear. We're talking terrorists and their supporters.

Agreed. Thanks for taking the time to clarify that.

Woodygbw,
A cable modem running ONLY 40kb/s????... I would check with your cable operator and see what the bandwidth is. I have Comcast cable and the lowest I've ever seen is around 1.25MB/s. Its usually around 4MB/s. Good luck with it.

Usually I get a lot better performance. Probably congestion on the net. In the end, I now have completed the download and am taking a look at the tutorials.
Thanks for the pointers.
Any pointers on learning this game now?

The rest of us just wish we had speeds like that, my cable modem supplier advertises 2-50 times the speed of a 28.8 modem. About the best I get is 110k per second downloads and 15k per second uploads. This from one of the first cable systems to offer data access, myriad.net, bought out by tca.net (to get their cable modem technology), most recently bought out by cox-internet.com.
If you are getting 4m/s you must be the only subscriber in your segment and have no bandwidth cap on your modem.
thanks, John.

As I recall the fastest server with SPWAW used to the the Finnish one, I don't know if it is still up.
thanks, John.

What people commonly forget is that its more than your connection that makes up a connection.
I have had great download speeds and poor download speeds. But then I have had great connections and poor connections. I can transfer a several meg file with one friend in a few minutes, and then wait an eternity for a stupid few hundred k file to transfer due to the source not being equipped to go any faster.
My download of 6.1 (also reaquired a fresh copy of 5.01) took me about 3 hours or more, but my copy of 5.01 back when it was just plain 5.01 took me all day. My friend was able to get it in just 90 minutes during the same period.
So there can be no hard fast rule about download speeds in the end. To many variables. Dan must have located a superior source at that time, and had a better online connection and less congestion.
Of course those of us without fast options dont have the option in the first place. it generally takes 2-3 days of total line domination to get SPWaW the hard way. But for a free game with a logical shelf worth of 60-70 dollars (in canadian terms at least) its hard to say a person can complain (unless your country has oppressive online service pricing policies, like we know some do).
