How will the base construction be handled in WitP?

Hi all,

How will the base construction be handled in WitP?

From history books we all know that really big (and proper) naval bases took
years to make while aviation bases (including large strips for heavy bombers)
took months to construct.

In UV this seemed way way to accelerated...

As far as I know nothing has changed as far as base construction goes. However, a lot of things have changes as far as base capabilities. Things like sub re-supply, mine warfare, repair ect..

Thanks for replaying, "Kid"!

Hi all,

First of all thanks for replaying "Kid"!

OK - but please see below for few more related questions...

RGR.

But what about base size numbers (in UV the biggest base is size 9) and
corresponding capabilities?

I think I saw early Alpha WitP pictures with Pearl Harbour (and perhaps
Singapore) base size larger than 9 (I think they were 11).

Would player be able to build up to base size 9 (just like in UV) and leave
higher base size numbers to larger pre-war effort (i.e. base building effort
that took years like the things actually were for port, let's say, Singapore)?

Also would the base size numbers correspondent (i.e. have the same abilities)
as in UV regarding ship repair for example or we need specialized stuff in
ports as well (like existence of Naval/Merchant repair yard and/or repair
ships)?

Thanks in advance!

The largest Base size is a size 10. Don't forget the AR's (Repair ships) that can be stationed at a smaller port to assist with repairs. There are also type tenders AD Destroyer, AS Submarine and AGP PT Boat tenders that If I remember correctly also have some repair enhancement for the appropriate type ships. They also allow torpedo resupplies at a smaller port.

Small airbase and runway did not take as long to build as many may think.

Take Adak Alaska for example, the US forces landed on Sept. 1 1942, they had a working runway with medium bombers landing by Sept. 12 1942. 11 days in a horrible climate and they were able to have at least a tactical airbase complete and operational. They used steel girders at Adak to lay down the runway, which could be repaired easy and all you needed was a pretty firm and packed level area to lay the mesh down and bingo just add bombers.

Yes, they had that mesh material to lay the runway down...I heard they could repair a major bomb hole in 45 minutes with this at Henderson.

All you need is a cleared and leveled area of sufficient size to accomodate fighters and other single engined planes. Bring in some ammo and fuel storage, build a small tower, radar/radio shack, AA guns and barracks, hangars or just camo netting, revetments...this is all stuff that a relatively small engineer unit could put together fairly quickly or build with a bulldozer and locally available materials. I think that Ports should take a lot longer to build than airfields. They require bringing in heavy equipment like cranes and derricks which I imagine take more effort to set up, building piers and whatnot, storehouses...still definitely doable, but I think it would require much more engineering, poured concrete/permanent structures, technicians, laborers, defenses...
