Of all the scens you've played, both the ones included with SP:WaW and ones you've downloaded, which is/are your favorites? What makes a scen fun, IYHO?

The Stalingrad Camp is the best..It has it all! And the NO-ONE holds a candle to those maps...

Favorite scenario is a tough call ... so many good ones. As Jess mentioned, the Stalingrad campaign is a masterpiece. A lot has to do with the individual players interests, and personal experiences. With this in mind I remember having a good time with the monster scenarios "Steel Shield", "Lehr at Omaha", and "SST North of the Psel" but I could never play them now, because they are too huge. For mid-sized scenarios I like "Task Force Wilder", "Maus that Roared", and so many others I can't remember right now... My personal best in a scenario (and I have this one enshrined in a saved slot) is "Suburbs of Leningrad" where I won without losing even one man! My worst, despite trying at it from the Russian side four times is "Royal Opponent" ... I just can't do well in that one! :( One of my earliest Spwaw experiences was getting killed right down to the last man in Wild Bill's Ramelle scenario ... I got hooked on the game after that, I guess I'm a masochist :D :D :D

... P.S. please update "Luck and the Last Teutonic Knight" it's a classic too!

Brave Men at Beito.

The battle for Tarawa has always held my interest. The book "Utmost Savagery" by Joseph Alexander and the book by Eric Hammel "76 Hours: The Invasion of Tarawa." Are 2 of my favorites on the subject.

I own both - the Hammel book was one of his first (one of my first purchases as well) - one of the soft covers - with all the pictures - I can't remember who printed them right now. That one lost its cover a few moves ago. Mr. Alexander's IMO is the best book on the subject.

At one time I remember there was a Tarawa Scenario posted by "EHammel". It was a big one as I remember. I downloaded it once but have since lost it between switching out computers or HDD crashes. Anyone know where that one is? Was the creator of the scenario the author Hammel? Or just someone using the name?

One of my favorites is 'Battle of the Behemoths'. When I suggested the idea for it, it turned out to be a better battle than I had hoped! played on either side.

Major thumbs up!

This is a great thread but it would be nice if people could put not only the name of the scenario, but where these super senarios are located; H2H, WAW-7.1, download url, etc.

just a thought...

"Blood and Honor" (both versions), by Brent 'Grenadier' Richards. They cover the two battles of Kharkov in early '43.

M4, whenever this post comes up, I have to put in a plug for your "Schoolhouse" scenario. For those who have not played it, the battle focuses on taking an urban crossroad during the battle of Kursk. It has a great balance of tanks and infantry in an urban setting and the location of the VHs makes you keep pushing the Russians back. One of my most enjoyable battles!

I just downloaded the new 'Dirty Dozen', and I am playing the new KG Pieper scen. I'm about 10 turns into it, and it is very challenging! Get past the Soviets and return with the embattled remains of an encircled German formation! An enthusiastic thumbs up! Well done!

Agree that the Stalingrad Campaign is absolutely superb. Beautifully done! Challenging! Full of variety!

Second the nomination of M4's School House Scenario.

But I also think that M4's Market Garden Scenario merits mention as one of the best. I'm not sure if that's the title he used, and I think I got it directly from him. But it belongs among the small class of masterpieces of design. I've been doing it pbem and it works beautifully. A challenge for both sides and full of surprises. Check it out.

"My worst, despite trying at it from the Russian side four times is "Royal Opponent" ... I just can't do well in that one! :( "

Hey Willy,

About Royal Opponent, I designed it to be played from the russian side and in fact a Marginal there is possible but will demand a hard work due the ideias from RockinHarry to improve AI behaviour there :D
But at least a draw you can achieve there for sure.

As my favourite scens, I also vote for Stalingrad Campaing, Moment of the Thruth and Watchword freedon campaing.

Yay! My scenario was mentioned. North of the Psel was a ridiculous endeavor to embark upon for my first scenario. In the end I had to basically make it like 10 times before it was playable (so as to acquire an adequate amount of experience). Now*, I'm trying to make a ridiculous campaign that no one really has time to play either using North of the Psel as one of the scens.

Anyways, as for me Stalingrad represents some of the best SPWAW I've played. Individual scenario-wise tho.. hmm... I really liked WB's Prokhorovka and Steel Shield scenarios (but that's because I'm obsessed with massive scenarios). The Mamayev Kurgan scenarios where really good individual scenarios in the Stalingrad campaign. Man, I really liked a lot of scenarios and having played what feels like hundreds of them it's hard to really choose a favorite.

Tomo

*(lol, been working on it for like 2 years)

Don't get me wrong!

Hi Adantas! I hope you don't think I disliked "Royal Opponent" ! I just reread my post and my wording was poor and rather unclear ... I actually really like that scenario and it's one of my all time faves! I was just lamenting my poor performance in it, but I haven't tried it in a while, so I'll go back and give it a go ... makes you appreciate the historic performance of those Soviet tankers!

Yes, Eric Hammel worked briefly with us on the oob developement team, but left after some disagreements with others on how to proceed with protocol or something, it's been too long ago, I don't really remember, that was even before I was the oob chief....loooong time ago!;) Ahh, fond memories of developent of this fine game.

And thanks for your comments about it :D
Perhaps I can return to the design desk after that :)

In regards to some of these scenarios, someone mentioned it would be good if you could actually find them. For anyone interested you can find some oldies but goodies at a site called Steel Panthers HQ/Jagdtiger. Scenarios like North of the Psel and Royal Opponent are there along with some Fabio Prado gems. Site is in Polish, I think. Look for the scenario packs. Go to http://stellar.no-ip.info/index.htm for a slew of M4 scenarios.
Missing through the transition from the old Wild Bill Raider site now are gems like Attack of the Dead Squirrel(M4), Red River(SWA) and I think even a Moscow campaign was on the page I'm referring to. It would be nice if a site like the Wargamer could build up a large base of scenarios. Currently, every site I know of only has a little here, a little there.

That is a tough one to answer! So many good scenarios over time. I've played hundreds and hundreds of them. Some I've played over and over.

The question is kinda like, "What is your favorite song?" Depends on what's playing on the radio ;)

Personally, the shorter, hard hitting, surprising scenarios that can be replayed using other tactics. They are kinda like a good movie, you watch it over and over again, picking up little nuances that you might have missed before.

Moves like "A Walk in the Sun," "Sands of Iwo Jima," "Saving Private Ryan," or "We were soldiers." I can watch them again and again and glean something new from them.

I guess I could list my top five or ten that come to mind. I'll have to shake the brain to get the cobwebs out and see what I can remember!

Some of the MC-SE scenarios fit that description but of course at this point, I can't talk about them too much.

More later...WB
