New to wir

I have not started playing this yet..and probally won't, do to time constraints but I might like to in the near future. What is it about this ugly looking dos game keeps people playing it? (and has me considering devoting time to learning it)
Thanks! Also anyone who plays Pacific War same question. I have UV and I guess Gary Grigsby in the credits has me contemplating.

Does anyone have anything to say about WIR?

How about depth of play? How does this compare to more modern games? I was playing around with this last night but the jury is still out.
Any comments for a curious gamer who is more interested in depth and good game play then graphics?

Well, I'm personally obsessed with the game because it's a comprehensive 'simulation' of the entire eastern front from the beginning of barbarossa right to ze bunker in 1945. You can immerse yourself in the gameplay and units as deeply or as shallowly as you want during the game, and although the map looks overwhelming at first, by the end of your first game I found it looks much smaller. Grigsby did an amazing job putting detail in the right areas like individual tanks and plane types, but simplifying others like putting all aircraft wings in HQ's instead of managing airfields. There are some annoying bugs, but we can actually have some hope they may get fixed in the future by Arnaud Bouis who is doing a great job doing upgrades to the game. So in conclusion, I would say this is by far the best and most comprehensive recreation of one of the most brutal conflicts in history and although it does some things wrong, they'r almost inconsequential since it does everything else soooo right!!
Pacific War is very similer but that battle is much more all-encompassing and detail oriented. I would LOVE to get into it, but I found the port/airfield/Taskforce info is not upfront like in WiR - in WiR you can single left click on an Army/Korps/HQ and you get an upfront general unit count, allowing you to check your lines really fast. In PacWar you have to get it by entering a menu so it takes much longer, and there's WAY more things to check!
But the one biggest thing that makes both games rock - Play By EMail!

I truly enjoy WIR, though a few more options would make it better. And, I admit it does have a few problems, but most of them can be overcome by player cooperation and knowing how to work the system.
It's one of the few strategy games out there that has a simple and functional interface that hasn't tried to stay inline with the mainstream need for high-memory graphics and realtime garbage.
Few other games allow a player so much control and so many options without bogging you down into real time consumptive matters. I tried Pacwar, but found it uncomfortable to work with, added to the fact that the Pacific doesn't interest me nearly as much as the European struggle.
