attacking off board artillery

I read somewhere in the manual that off board artillery can be attacked due to the enemy seeing muzzle flashes and sound. If this is true, then how do you know if the enemy is bombing your artillery. I assume that the units will not be able to fire, but does a message tell you that this is the reason?

Yes, at the end of each player's turn, if a counterybattery fire occurs, a message appears below the map screen, together with rallying messages and such.
Then, if you've been "counterbattered", check your artillery units' screen to check for possible damages occurred (either some crew members killed or guns destroyed).

It's called counterbattery fire and you will see a message flash by at the end of your turn if it happens. I don't think there is anything you can do to make it more likely to occur. But the player with the longer ranged arty is the one who usually gets the advantage. You can see the results of it in your unit info screen (i.e. the clipboard icon). From there you will sometimes see that your off board arty is retreating or routed. That's a good indication that you've been counterbattery fired.

Resisti hit the submit button within seconds of me. Rats!
It must be true what we said though since we are both saying the same thing.

Occasionally a Counter-battery will result in exploding all your ammunition. When you go to check the battery, it's all '0's.
