Am I slow or what?

Am I the only klutz when setting up a game that takes over an hour to select my units and deploy them?
I'm talking only about 5000 points. I just spend forever looking over the terrain and thinking strategy. My regular opponent tells me to 'just' start a new game, and I let him know that I can't 'just' start a game------it's gonna take me about 2 hours.
Maybe I'm too anal!
Anybody else too anal?

Sounds about right to me so I guess you are not alone. Thats the main reason I like to play smaller games.

Hmm me personally, I would rather play an opponent that spent the time to think out his opening decisions actually.
Take your time on that key part of the game dude. If you find some are just to impatient, ask for smaller point sums, or just tell them they are to impatient.
This ain't some RTS silliness, this is a game of wits in a different style. Reward yourself with a well thought out plan. Just try to send the turns back to your opponent in a timely way, that is one area that most gamers will appreciate.

Take your time, I play fast but my intitial setup does take time, don't be rushed. You will speed up in force selection over time. But having a plan is the most important thing IMO

Only two hours??? Man, you are a speed demon! Against a PBEM opponent I can sometimes take several days to wheedle out a force that I'm satisfied with. Longer if it's a country that I'm not really familiar with.
Many times, with a 5000 point force, I can take over an hour just to play one turn. (But I know for a fact that
I'm anal.)

I take forever too.
Pay no attention to how fast V2 is with his turns. He's unique in that he is a fast AND very good player. That's a rare combination.
I prefer to play PBEM Scenarios (all the work is done for you and no crazy purchase issues with your opponent) for the very reason that my buying and deployment is so slow. Deployment really chews up alot of my setup time.

It took me three and a half hours to set up a 7K point game on the “Mother of all Maps”. I swear, they just keep getting bigger, thank you Viking

. I hadn’t noticed the time (it is a REALLY beautiful map), and was reminded by the girlfriend with a quick kick in the ribs.
She is a very understanding lass.

Ditto.
Setup seldom takes me much longer after I see the map. BUT, this is one of the more enjoyable parts of the game, and you should stand your ground! Take what time you want, if it helps you enjoy the play more. The best part of this game is how it fits everyone's different play styles.

I'm with the Opinionated old fart and the lawyer.
I can take up to 4 hours to play a turn early in the game when the plan needs to be watched closely. Sometimes I open a turn and look at it and see what I see and maybe move one or two recon units and shut it down while I mull over the alternatives.
My set-ups can take days. I often do practice set-ups and purchases and spend much time re-organizing the force so that company commanders and platoon commanders can assist with rallying the troops. Each unit has its objective and each transport has it primary and secondary duty. I always buy in companies but seldom keep all the store shelf units. I trade for whatever the plan calls for Engineers, SPAA, ATGs, AT units, snipers, whatever is needed to do the most efficient job with no waste. If I spent 250 points on one tank, It had better be for a good reason that is crucial to the plan. When I lose, it is because I didn't do the purchase and set-up to match the map and objectives.
And also because my play sucked.
Take your time doing it right the first time. You don't get a second chance.

A Goblin is impetuous (and toothy)
A Buzzard is Patient (and efficient)

With 5,000 points, an hour for setup would be warp speed for me. (Unless I'm feeling daring and just use the AI's auto settup.)

This is still something I need to learn. I try to buy what is appropriate for the scenario, and I even try to formulate a plan. But after about 3 turns that plan is dead (along with 30% of my troops), I find I missed something vital - like no infantry (well maybe not quite THAT extreme) or that I should have bought a larger infantry force......I am trying to slow down in how I play (so against 1 opponent at the moment I moved 3 units (and 1 by accident) to do some recon and stopped there.

Take 'er easy,
RobW, you'll get there. Try playing scenarios; they usually have some amount of balance, and you'll learn why X and Y were paired together after a few. Have you tried Munda?
As for setup... eh, that takes about an hour or so. So do each of my turns--at least! I can cut it down to about 30 minutes if I have to, but somehow I just can't help being meticulous.
