I'm sorry to ask this. I read the manual and it seems to be pretty vague about this, but what do HE and AP represent? I'm pretty sure that AP stands for Armor Penetration. But I'm not sure what HE stands for.

PLease help.

HE: High Explosive (mostly used against infantry and lightly armored/unarmored vehicles and aircraft) Calibers of 100+ may also cause Splash damge in adjacent hexes.

HEAT: High Explosive, Anti-Tank (used against vehicles, ignores slope calculations, IIRC, and may have splash damage capability)

AP: Armor Piercing (only used against armored vehicles)

APCR: Armor Piercing Composite Rigid (used against armored vehicles - shorter range than AP, but usually much higher Penetration values)

Range and target type will determine which type of round will be fired. Note the second value under Range in the weapon's description gives the maximum range for the APCR/HEAT rounds. The first range value is for the standard HE/AP rounds.

These four are the amunition types represented in SPWaW. You may see references to several other ammo types including HESH (High Explosive, Squash Head), APDS (Armor Piercing, Discard Sabot) and others. Although they are technically different, they don't pose any real difference over the four ammo types represented in the game.

There is no way, AFAIK, to manually select an ammunition type to fire. The game does this for you automatically. For the most part the choices are foregone, but occasionally it would be nice to select AP over APCR or vice-versa.

Also, a particular unit may fire one or the other AP/APCR round preferentially. they are NOT all the same in this regard. Your best bet is to take them out on the practice range first and find out which type of round they select for which type of target.

I've known a few people in rl who fit that description. :D:D

I think the second range applies only for the APCR/HVAP/APDS ammo. The HEAT shells generally tend to have the same range as the HE ones, their effect doesn't depend on the range and their shape and weight is similar to the HE shells, so there is no reason for them to have shorter range, I think.

I get splash from 88mm and 90mm guns too.
