Is this a fluke or Did I just become Admiral Halsey?

Hi Everyone:
I am not sure if this was “tactically correct” but in the early opening moves I had the Lex and Yorktown Group near PM when the IJN hit Gili Gili. After a couple of rounds of pounding the poor base by the IJN TF planes (never intended to stop them; just wanted them to not get it for free), I quickly moved my TF near the base, set my fighters to 30% CAP and covered the TF with fighters from PM.
What happened really surprised me. The IJN air groups must have been tired but when I hit them, I sank one CV and a CVL while damaging another CV. When their air strike arrived over my task force, they were met with a wall of fighters from the CAP and PM. I took heavy aircraft losses but escaped to the south without any serious damage! I was amazed considering the experience of my pilots and poor AA ratings of the ships!
Conclusion: Either dumb luck of a beginner or I just discovered the secret to life. Don’t know if this will work again but it sure was fun to get in my hits and not take any in return. Before I went to bed I kissed the AI and thanked her. Of course, she will be hard to live with tomorrow!

the use of the CAP from a neighboring base is a very good tactic and in effect adds a carrier to your TF. Luckily the GG CAP was significant because 30% cap over the carriers is rather low but it did give you the escort power you needed to overcome their CAP. There was some risk in it as in all operations but it paid off.

Hi, Except in UV land based CAP over CV TF's do really poor.
I think it was the IJN being tired (and having ac not in strikes because they were damaged from prior attacks)
It's always good to catch the enemy when your boys are in better shape.

It maybe poor but I've used neighboring CAP effectively more than once.

Hi, I believe there may still be some kind of bug involved when landbased LR CAP over CV TF is used.
Manual says that this kind of LR CAP is very ineffective (20% efficency of "normal" LR CAP) but I am not sure. I wrote about it in a thread long ago:
http://www.matrixgames.com/default.asp? ... Ft%3D25228
After that LR CAP over CVs was further toned down in the latest patches, but I still believe there may be some strange goings on there.
This is the reason why I try to put into effect houserule "no land based LR CAP over CVs on open sea" in my PBEM games.
BTW I never complained over the results of "pure" CV vs CV battles (when there was no landbased LR CAP involved).
Maybe it's just the issue of P39 being too effective against Vals and Kates?

I tested it again and I got slaughtered. I don't think it was a bug as it was probally more of a fluke of the odds. Maybe it was the windshield because it didn't work when I tried it again. Went from being called "Halsey" to being relieved of command the second time.

Dang. I was just going to add more of Snigbert's perceptive insight to my sig. Guess he was not as insightful as I thought.

All in good fun.
