I wonder if it runs on XP....

I still have the original H&D somewhere - never even knew there was an expansion out. That and OFP were about the only fun I had playing co-op in shooters. I think I played H&D more than OFP too. Definitely my favorite WW2 shooter.

If the stinkin' thing runs and someone feels like trying it out....

Huh ? Top notch game, even if the original release was a tad buggy. Did you ever actually play it ?

Just finished the first mission again. A blast from the past. Yep, it´s dated, but it was still fun. Canßt wait for 2. Man this is going to be an expensive gaming fall / winter ;)

Just downloaded it and tried the first mission. Still not too sure how to control teammates properly, but looks like a fun game.
We should start a Matrix player campaign :)
If anybody wanna play, i'm for it.

I saw that there is a voice chat? Does it work well?

Oh Lord

You people found fun in this game?

Where does one begin....

Horrible controls ( by far the worst part of the game)
Mind numbingly stipid AI (your "friends" are about as useless as having French soldiers coming along with you)
Every German in the game shoots better than Doc Holliday
Take forever to equip your team ( and the game does a terrible job with its auto select)
Horrible AI pathfinding...they go from point A to point B like they are impterpative dance majors and not commandos...and as a result a German MG-42's their asses down
Terrible Collison issues
Good luck getting up ladders and such
Mission Objectives are vauge so its trial and error
I got it when it came out...and it had some horrible horrible bugs
The patches helped...but not enough
And then the game is hard....I like hard games...but when it take 20 tries for each mission...something is wrong

Ill give it 8 outa 10 for the idea
3 outa 10 for the execution

Ok, you asked for it :D.

The controls didn't trouble me. From the controlling aspect the only problem was the climbing but there's not too much of that. The feeling is different than in Quake et al. but what do you expect from a more realistic shooter anyway?

AI was pretty much standard, no shooter does it really well or do you have an example? Not like this is a good thing but just to compare to other similar games which I also like. That's also why the EYSA like AI should be used in an FPS too. To give a plausible higher level AI so the soldiers appear to be using tactics, not just sniping or assaulting.

The friends were critical for survival. My tactic was to usually split the men into two two-guy teams and control the point man in each. The other guy(s) would give covering fire and that worked very well. Mind you, I do this a lot in other games too. Didn't see any too big problems with pathing but I didn't use the tactical screen much.

The accuracy and lethality is something that might spoil the game for some but I consider it better than to have Hollywood style gunfights. At least I too could hit from afar :p. It makes for some pretty intense experiences because loading time is quite long and you don't want to get too many of your men killed. This is pretty much the only aspect that I'd like to change too. Many missions ended up as sniping contests. Man, clearing trenches was fun too.

Equipping is a non-issue for me. Never had any real probs besides I like fiddling with the equipment and that management part of it. Scrounging enough ammo for the schmeissers etc. ah good memories.

Missions were varied, clear to me and pretty fun overall. When the game got out there weren't any games that were essentially shooters but also made you drive around in a halftrack trying to escape a pursuing Tiger. Or one of the missions I liked most, you go to blow up a dam but your plane is shot down midway and you have to jump early. Your team is scattered in a forest crawling with gerry patrols. Consolidate, gang up and head back to the dam.

The patch is essential, it adds in-game save. Use it to your advantage. It's especially useful in the longer missions. I wouldn't play this game without it. Some of the missions are really long.

I never quite finished the game but the only mission that took really many tries was the one where a whole company of gerries assaulted this cabin of mine while I was trying to escape with a plane. But it was a fun, intense and short mission.

So, if you like light tactical shooters, WW2 shooters, the idea of controlling four characters, want to spend some time on a game, then get it... hey it's free now. And cooperative multiplayer is a blast too.

Oh, by it´s time it was great. The issues you brought up were pretty widespread with everything 3D related in that time ;). Granted, now after 3 generations of 3rd person and FPS later, the game has issues. But I had still no problems playing it yesterday. First thing I did was remapping the keys to "FPS" standard :P

The game was a whole lot of fun. In fact so much fun that it has a place on my "evergreens" shelfplace here ;)

Marc, Just wondering what exactly you have on your "evergreens" shelf?

H&D is a great game, a lot of the bugs are fixed in this new version, and its still exciting as hell even with the outdated graphics (but not really that outdated). Its the only game I know that actualy tried to synchronize movement between the team member, something I have not realy seen since. In the combat manual it provided in game solutions to tactical problems that your team may encounter from room clearing, to escorting vehicles and tank busting. Once I have the time I plan to play the whole campaigne.. right now I have a whole bunch of stuff to go through, I just go Chrome, waiting to get a English Version of Combat Mission 2, Max Payne 2, Commandoes 3, H&D 2, Call of Duty.. and all of this before the end of October..

Runs beautifully on XP! All the bugs that ruined the original version appear to have been cleaned up as well.

It is quite interesting to replay this game again as it is immediately evident how far ahead of its time it actually was back in 1999. There are games of this genre being released now that don't have the chops that H&D had back in the day.

I'll have to reorient myself with it again, as I've downloaded it but haven't installed yet.

After that...
Anyone up for some co-op? It's the best shooter I've seen for it!
