Phil,

As per your request ... some tips ...

-----

I am not looking at the scenario, Heartbreak Ridge, right now. However, I had played it in both RDOA and HTTR with full order delays.

My approach would be to rebalance my forces such that I would have one armor heavy force and two infantry heavy forces.

The armor heavy force would attack frontally over open ground up the ridge. (If I recall, it will probably be replused once or twice.)

The two infantry forces would attack the Ridge through the woods from East and the West.

Eventually, the Germans will begin to falter and finally fallback to the North as the armor force drives up the middle.

I believe there was some arty. If it is in range, then put it on call, [D]efend, immediately. You haven't got time to waste.

Also, you probably want to command maximum effort from the troops, meaning AGGRO=MAX, ROF=MAX, CASUALTIES=MAX/HIGH ... Lower settings are more appropriate for protracted struggles where you are trying to wear down the enemy. With 12 hours, you only really have one chance to get the job done.

Also, if I recall, I might have sent some armored car companies to circle around and probe the Ridge from the North. The intent was not recon; as this scenario doesn't need any recon. I just simply wanted to harass the Germans. Also, you never know what you might turn up when you approach from the back door. Perhaps, you'll turn up some arty or mortar positions which can then be hammered by your own guns. :)

---

Note: In HTTR, the armor attack will be more effective as it will move to contact and then standoff at the effective range of their main cannons as opposed to immediately attempt to close assault dug-in enemy infantry. Perhaps in RDOA, you might want to delay the armor push a bit so that the infantry advancing on the German flanks can disrupt their positions on the Ridge a bit. Another option would be to have the [A]ttack task marker fall short of the Ridge Peak. And yet another option might be to command the Armor to form a defensive line position half way up the Ridge and stand off. Of course, when the Germans begin to falter, then you will need to issue new orders to the Armor to take the central peak of the Ridge.

---

Phil,

Go take that Ridge and send us some photos (screenshots) with yourself astride the Ridge with a German 88mm in the background!

Phil,

To take a screenshot:
1. Press the Print Screen key
2. Press Alt Tab to get back to the desktop
3. If not already open, then open your paint program ( MS Paint will do - it should be under Accessories )
4. Select the Paint program
5. Cmd V to paste the screenshot
6. Edit to your heart's content
7. Save as jpeg format.

To attach your screenshot to a post, follow the instructions on the forum - just hit the FAQ and search for "attachment" to get the instructions. They're pretty simple. ;)

Phil,

I was going to take a quick run through this scenario as I wanted to squeeze in a quick scenario before going to sleep. Well, much to my chagrin (a French word migrated to English :) ), it doesn't appear that Heartbreak Ridge was carried over to HTTR. :( Unless, the set I have is different from what ended up on the gold master. The other demo scenario did get carried over; "Drive on Loenen" ... now called, "Advance on Loenen". I know I definitely played Heartbreak Ridge in one of the HTTR betas, since I had wanted to see how the tweaked armor would behave. Oh, well ...

But don't worry, there are quite a few short scenarios that ship with HTTR if you only have a couple of hours after dinner to play. :)

As tu passe une bonne vacance dans le Sud de la France?

My strategy to win Heartbreak Ridge follows.
I retried it and found that it may still works.

First, keep order delays low (regular or realistic). Scenario is short, you won't have any time to change your orders).

Note that objectives are 100 points in total. You won't have much time to "destroy the ennemy". To score a decisive victory you'll have to take the three objectives. Or at least take two, denying the last one.

Take each Guard group under your command.
Order the Welsh and Irish (for example) for a large frontal assault. Take a formation point out of LOS (behind woods, for example).
Order the Gren Guards to sneak on the east and take the eastern objective.
The Coldstream Guards are in reserve ... on the other side of the ridge. Order them to defend the other side of the ridge, take waypoints to stay away from ennemy, out of sight.
Leave arty on call (defend orders) were they are, they are already within range.
Use the two armoured car Coy to recon and block the western and eastern roads. You might want to probe the defense, here and there, also.

When the first two groups are well in contact and the Coldstream reaches its position, order them to attack, preferably, in the center.
Be careful, the Coldstream Guards will encounter poor tank country, they will take time to manoeuver. Put your orders timely.
Hopefully, the rear attack will completely disrupt the Axis defense and you can take each objective with the other three Guards Groups.

Be aggressive : aggro = max, rate of fire = rapid. You only have 12 hours and the ennemy is tough.

A final note, the Western road is too difiicult for armoured groups. You'll have to cross too much woods and seize an objective in the way. The back door is better.

See you there,

JeF.
PS : Mark, your french is getting better ;)

Works wonderfully, thanks. I tried this one many times and could only achieve a marginal at best; your tactics got me a decisive the first time <g>.

Timing seems to be the key. Hit them in the rear and up the east flank first than while they're engaged let the Welsh and Irish roll up the open south (frontal) approach. Lots of kills this way.

Great fun . . . on to Loenen.

Ken

PS Looking forward to HttR
