Why unit is out of contact?

I'm playing a PBEM game and I have 9 mortar units all within one hex of my HQ and they are all listed as out of contact and therefore can't fire. Does that make sense? The subordinate units are in contact with the commanding units but the commanding units are all listed as out of contact even they are within sight of the HQ.
Please help quickly, I'm losing!

The boxes to plot them are greyed out, I assume? Check and see if they have any ammo left. When they do not, it looks like they are out of contact.

We're playing with unlimited ammo.

If the subordinate units are 'in contact', can't you use them to order the fire mission?

When I say subordinate, I mean the A1, A2, A3 units under command of A0. Those units are in contact with A0 but A0 is out of contact with HQ. Therefore when I attempt to order an artillery bombardment from either my HQ or any FO I can't because these units (A0, B0, etc) are 'out of contact' even though they are stacked in the same hex as my HQ.
These units were all firing fine in the beginning of the game and then I loaded them onto trucks and moved them about 20 hexes and since then they've been unable to fire.

Another thing to check is if the selected target hex is, in fact, in range of the artillery unit. If the target is out of range, the barrage/smoke buttons will also be grayed out. (This probably isn't the problem, but it's worth mentioning)
I get this too, occasionally. One or two of a group of artillery will lose contact for no apparent reason. Even though the units on either side are still in contact.
Another thing I've noticed is athat clusters of artillery will sometimes start acquiring suppression
without having been fired upon (?) They can be rallied normally. My thought is that all the concussion of 120mm mortars all going off simultaneously within 100 meters of each other just freaks out some of the crews. This seems to become more of a problem as the on-board calibers become larger. I've also noticed that this has been a 'problem' for every version since 5.0

I have seen instances where my arty buttons were grayed out until I clicked on one and then several more "lit" up and I was able to then use. Have you acutally tried to click on one of those gray buttons?
No idea why this sometimes happens, though.
Another idea...

Another thing to check - who are you using to call in the arty? Make sure it is a x0 unit. Also, try calling arty with a couple of different x0s. I *think* I have seen cases where one spotter could call arty but another could not even though both spotters were in contact themselves.
One more - :p are you playing w/ C&C on? Your spotter could be out of orders.
Hope one of these helps!
