Bug or not

I have been intermittantly blasting away at Gili Gili for months. There is Japanese CA chikuma anchored there. I have hit this ship heaps upon heaps of shells from BB to DD, but it hasn't sunk, a bug? Has anyone else experienced this playing the allies? about fifty plus shells

Load the game as the other side and take a look yourself.

Well, that confirms you are at least hitting it Image

It is possible due to it's docked status, it has managed to keep floation damage down just enough to stop it from sinking multiple times. I have never seen a ship with 95 SYS damage as they generally sink from Floatation damage long before getting there.

Wonder how many crew would still be alive. Thats like swiss cheese at that level, drop by with a rifle and finish it off will ya! Image

I've got the same thing going on right now with Mutsu in Shortlands harbor. I have bombed the p1ss out of this thing and it's still sitting there.

I think I remember a Matrix staffer once upon a time commenting on this. Ships disbanded in size 6+ ports don't sink from port air attacks is what I kind of remember him saying, they merely settle on the bottom and can be raised, so the damage inflicted is only system damage, not flotation damage (as my 82-year-old mother said when I told her I was thinking about buying a Toyota, "Tell it to the boys on the Arizona!"). I know that ships coming into port with major flotation damage can sink, because I've seen it happen many times.

A with so many other things, we could probably use an official clarification on this.

I also need to suggest (remind, possibly conclude?) that maybe your boys are giving some bad post action reports (what? you mean folks are taking credit for something they didn't do?? :D ). Seriously, any report of hits can be bogus, and you may not have done all the damage you think you have. I believe that previous damage (especially if fires are going) can be "mistaken" as current damage, just as near misses can be, etc (part of that FOW). I recall one instance where, in a PBEM game, my opponent got word that a CV was blasted to hell and back, was ribbing me on the sinking, but in fact she didn't have a scratch.

Just a thought.

(also, to pasternakski's point: I think I remember that comment, too, and while I've had some ships sink in port, for the life of me I can't recall one instance of one sinking in a large port -- doesn't mean it didn't happen, of course, but I think I'll watch for that going forward just to check our info.)

Toro, the system damage I reported is accurate, I took Frags advice and loaded the game from the japanese side, checked ship out from there :p

Mutsu

Hi, While CA and smaller can be hurt badly by port attacks I think Mutsu could take quite a bit. Not every bomb that hit her would penetrate. Before the IJN built the 2 monsters, Mutsu and Nagato were two of the largest and most armored BB in the world. I've seen BB hit in port attacks by 2 or 3 bombs and the next turn the system damage is 2 or 3 no flotation and no fires. (and I think the sys damage might have been 2 or 3 before the attack)
Even if the bomb does 5 sys damage the port might repair 2 or 3 per day and will keep the flooding and fires at 0 without trouble. To hurt the big boys you have to dump a lot of bombs everynight for quite a while. (I had Enterprise in port Brisbane getting hit quite often. The IJN CV were sitting up in the gap so I couldn't get her back to Noumea. She took at least 20 bomb hits. Then when the CV left I tried to return her to Noumea but she was only half way when the IJN CV returned and found her. While she was in port she got up to 99 SYS several times but always over the next few days would get back to 92-95 I even put her in a TF a few night and avoided the attacks but Japanese bombardment TF's began running in so she had to stay in port and just take the pounding. (moral of this story: If you have a USN CV you are trying to preserve while waiting for others just sent it back to PH or keep it at Noumea. If it is bombed at Noumea you won't lose it sending it to Brisbane is throwing it away.)

Wouldnt the ship eventually just break in half or suffer some sort of huge explosion they would scuttle it so the port wouldnt catch on fire?

Hi, If a ship is damaged and sitting in port and is hit by a bomb, the bomb might just be throwing scrap around. As long as the damage is above the water line.
After you've burned out an area it hard to start new fires. (or fires that do any more damage)
A BB or CV is a really large ship. bouncing non penetrating hits off a turrent does nothing to speak of. It's even harder for the Japanese since they only drop 250kg bombs. Even a CA/CL has areas they will bounce off of. Then you have your empty cargo ship or tanker. The bombs will penetrate but what do they damage? the cargo doors and bulkheads. It's damage below the waterline or fires that are out of control that sink ships. Ships sitting in port have a lot of damage control nearby.
Personally I think the ships are too easy to hit. If the enemy is bombing at night they are using the reports from their recon or last bomb run. If you are running a port and a enemy patrol plane flies over and your in range of bombers (or have already been attacked) Your going to do the simple things. Your going to move your ships. (So when the bombers arrive overhead at 0200 the ships are not sitting where the the patrol plane reported them at 1400. It does not take long to shift berths.
I know the ships use AA ammo because you have to put them into TF's and reload after a port attack but the AA fire does not seem to be very effective.

I hope this routine gets a work over. I can't tell if the bombers are targeting the ships or if the bombs just get divided up between ships, port, supply, fuel.
But they seem to hit the same ships over and over even when there are other ships in port. (When Enterprise was being hit in Brisbane every night there were 20+ other ships in port that were never hit)
