Large ground combat at PM in PBEM game.

What is the correct order for engineers to go in and reduce the fortifications?

Do you set them to deliberate attack or leave them on defend?

I think they haven't been doing their job yet because the odds are not yet in their favour.

Want to be sure that it isn't because I am giving the wrong order.

Set them for deliberate attack. Section 13, "Attacking combat engineer units( those with infantry type squads in the unit) attempt to reduce fortifications."

Note that they will 'attempt' to reduce them. They may not always do so. The manual does not elaborate on reasons they don't but expect it be dependant on morale, experience, fatigue, leadership, presence of HQ, etc.

Exact details:

Ground attacker will reduce fortifications based on computed odds.

ie: a 3 to 1 odds will reduce fortifications by 3.

Any engineers partaking in the attack get a BONUS chance to reduce the fortification by 1 level. Each ENG unit that was in the attack gets this chance separately from the above reduction.

For a unit to in considered in the attack, it must has some assault strength and be given the attack order (deliberate/shock doesn't matter, but must be one of them).

ENG units that do not have any assault strength can not partake in this activity (if you look at the various ENG units, you will notice that some have regular army squads and others don't).
