First MP Game !

Post by Tzar007 »

Played my first MP game today against Yakstock [:)]

Got a marginal defeat as Germans in the Arnhem Air Landing Assault.

This scenario is really a slugfest around the Arnhem bridge [:D]

I failed to blow the rail bridge so that did not help me I guess. And I realized I mismanaged my arty, not taking precautions to preserve it away from the battle.

Anyhow, a great first experience in MP, thanks to Yakstock !

Great! Some technical questions:

- What kind of link to the net do you have? Yakstock? Can this game be played over ancient 56k modem?
- Have you noticed any slow downs in the game (presumably due to network lag)?
- Where are you two (you are in Montreal, I assume)?

I'm not ready for "serious" net play yet, hope to be soon, but I'd like to imagine how it goes as regards tech issues...

Hello Oleg,

I have broadband internet access (cable modem). As for Yakstock, I don't know what kind of connection he had.

There was not any lag or slowdown at all. It felt exactly like playing against the computer (except Yakstock was much more aggressive than the AI [:)] )

I am in Montreal but I have no idea where Yakstock was, I guess in the US but I'm not sure.

Tzar007 played a great game - especially for his first MP - much better than I was on my first game. We did have a big slufest at the main bridge.

Oleg - you should definately try MP on the net. Not sure how the 56k modem will work but we can always try it out. Put your contact info on the "online player" post and add me to your list and we can hook up and test it out.

Dave "Arjuna" and I played a network game the other night, at Normal speed we where averageing less than 1 kilo bits per second. This would spike higher when someone changed there orders of course, up to 34k some times. YMMV.

I used to play RDOA on a very poor 56k line, not sure how HTTR would go. I have a 512/128kB cable connection in Canberra and was able to host Gary for a very smooth game.

My computer isn't that new either, P3-1GHz running WinMe (ugh).

I've played Yakstock on a 56k modem link and it's fine - but only if you play at the slowest speed. Hopefully I'll be broadband soon so this will no longer be an issue.
