Some questions for the pro's?

Hi,
Been playing UV for a while now, but I still have some questions that i not really sure about.

1 ) Are there any airborne or paratroopers in UV? If so how do u use them. Can they capture a base with out an airstrip, using Dakota’s to fly them in.

2) What’s the purpose of armour and arty, I assume arty are much better in bombarding, but what about armour, are u more likely to overrun the enemy if u have armour and the enemy don’t.

3) If u had a base that held 4 or 5 costal defences is that enough to stop any large taskforce bombarding u. Or doesn’t it matter how many u have. How many would be enough to stop the enemy. We talking about a large number of enemy BB's

4) What are the true effects of malaria? I have notice that troops lose one point of assault strength every day. So a unit that has 108, will be useless in 108 days time. Is it true that the malaria effects drop when the base is at airfield 6, port 6, and fort 6?
If u was to remove those troops to ur main bases, ie Truk, Normeo will their assault strength come back.

5) I know this question has been answered before the hack attack. If the japs was to capture giligili is there a point to it. With all that bombing from allied heavies is it really worth it. I wouldn't think it worth sending in engineering / costal units. Because u won’t ever develop anything there.

6) As far as I know the p-39 suffers when it flies above 10000 feet, I think I got that info somewhere on the forum. Are there any other planes that also suffer from altitude problems? That people should be aware of.

7) Skip bombing. I know there was a thread on it, but I think we lost it in the hack attack. Do people use it? Flying real low with level bombers. With pro pilots. Only drawback is there is a morale penalty in which the planes cannot fly for a few turns. Does the result prove better? I guess u evade the entire CAP, but can u do real damaged.

8) I’ve just received my new batch of CVE's I assume they are CVL's. The one that carries planes that is. If they CVL why do we need to called them CVE's? I know that this may sound silly, but where do they get the meanings of those short codes, like BB? For battleships?? AP, TK. CL CV? I can assume the C means Carrier what does the V mean? CVE?
CVL. carrier Light. Even DD, destroyer? Is it depth destroyer?

Thanks in advance [:)]

CVE stands for Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable. :)

Hi,

Not exactly a pro, but I think I can answer a few of your questions!

1. Yes, the US Marine Divisions got airborne units attached to them. Your Dakotas can fly them to any size 0-9 base
within range.

2. Arty is used to bombard enemy troops, tanks are used in offense/defense. The latter are very light and doesn't provide you with that much of a punch in UV.
Ground combat isn't very specialized in this game, so personally I look at the assault rating of armoured regiments and don't consider them very differently from inf units.

3. Coastal defense doesn't stop a BB bombardment tf - they would hit and probably damage the smaller vessels - cruisers and destroyers, but that's as much as you should expect. The biggest guns used for coastal defense in UV is 6" if I'm not mistaken - these are too light to compete with the 8-18" guns of CA's and BB's.

4. Malaria increases fatigue and more and more of the troops will become disabled over time. More and more of the troops will be listed [] as damaged... Only by moving the troops to a malaria free base, Truk, Australia, Nomea - will fatigue sink and the troops recover. This will take some time! The effect of malaria decreases with the size of the base, the effect is most profound before the base reaches an af size of 3 and port size 2...after that the effect falls quickly. As far as I know fort size doesn't influence the effect of malaria.

5. If you occupy both Gili Gili and Port Moresby, the bases will provide mutual support and if you can afford it, provide you with a choke point. This is often a matter of strategic choice though. I don't often put base forces in Gili Gili - instead I put em on Woodlark isl, and when the Allies invade either GG or PM, I launch counterstrikes from the supporting bases.

6. I put most of my fighters on CAP at 15k feet - except the P39/40's, they stay at max 10k as you suggests. I can't think of any other ac of importance that needs to be kept low.

7. Skip bombing is absolutely worthwhile, especially if you're using units with 70 exp and up. I start using it already at exp 60, level bombers doesn't hit ships very well from higher altitudes, so if I'm trying to bomb transports or destroyers/cruisers, I often set both my mediums and fighter bombers to skip bomb from 100 feet. They will also use their guns/cannons to strafe targets and the P39/40's carries up to 37mm cannons that will punch through the armour of a destroyer. Morale decreases quickly though, and you might suffer heavy damage to both cap and flak flying that low. Again you have to consider the cons and pros - is it more important to preserve your bombers or hit the enemy?

8. CVE's are not CVL's - mostly converted transports that got no protection and a very low top speed. I would not put CVE's into a cv tf if speed is of any importance. CVL's were often converted from cruiser hulls. The US Independece class were all built on Cleveland cruiers hulls. Here's a good link http://www.hazegray.org/navhist/carriers/us_light.htm
The acronyms used ain't very specific, DD simply means Destroyer. Here's a good link that explains it in detail http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/shusn-no/cv-no.htm

Hope this helps,

Re #8 - John's right. The critical difference between CVL's and CVE's is that the former (CVL) was merely a smaller carrier that was nevertheless built to keep up with the fleet carriers, the CV's. The CVE's were around 10 knots slower, which pretty much eliminated them from fleet carrier roles as they couldn't keep up. They instead accompanied transport TF's to provide CAP and ground attack elements in support of landings.

Read up on the TF's designated "Taffy" regarding the Battle of Leyte Gulf for a good description of the way that CVE's were used . . . at least until they got jumped by the considerable IJN surface force that Halsey was supposed to be screening with his CV's!

Some more points.

1. You can attack an enemy occupied base with paratroopers as well, but expect to take casulties and disruption big time.

2. A division fighting with its HQ unit and attached armor and artillery units will perform better. Just like in real life.

3. CD units will not hit BBs and rarely CAs. If you have a lighter force of DDs and CLs bombarding they will fight back and do some damage. CDs are most important as a deterrant to invasion. They will do some serious damage to transports and landing troops, if not sufficiently suppressed.

5. If you are the Japanese and playing the big scenarios, and do not take Gili Gili, you have lost.

7. Correct, P39 is the only plane penalized for fighting above 10k. As far as I know, no other plane pays any penalty.

8. CVE first real use was to escort convoys and provide air cover against subs. For this purpose they were very sucessful-especially considering that they were converted merchanmen. Great at support and escort duties and as plane ferrys, but too slow to accompany battlegroups. And easy to sink.

CD's are of more use in defending against invasion, and if not subdued, will really put a dint in your Tansports
