I noticed there will be airborne units in the game.
Will they be real units that can take control of territories, etc? If so, is it really realistic at this scale to have such capabilities? An airborne unit taking control of huge areas of land?

Sounds like someone is familiar with the HoI airborne problems.
Don't know if they ever got that fixed.
He's right though, only the allies ever had airborne forces with strength enough to occupy areas at this scale. And really, they needed backup too.
Of course, the only two times the Allies used the airborne troops in that kind of strength was in Overlord, and Market-Garden. And we all know what happened to them in M-G.

Dont forget the German with Success captured Crete using airborne, although costly they still took the island. Also to build Para's one has to go through great expense.

They won't if there is any opposition. They provide a bonus for amphibious attacks that include a para unit. That's their real bonus.

True, so I guess that counts. But my understanding is that the numbers involved were much smaller.
And yes, paratroopers have to be highly trained.
A side note is that the 82nd and 101st US Airborne spent most of the war acting like standard light infantry. The British 1st Airborne were basically destroyed as a combat unit after Market-Garden.
