First, kudos and thanks to Gary and Joel for producing what looks to be an outstanding game. This is especially exciting for gamers like me who find UV just a bit too detailed (but still fun) and A&A far too simplistic. Thanks again.
Question for Joel--what criteria did you use when dividing the map into territories?
Also, are you close to predicting a release date?? I need to warn my wife now of a lengthy upcoming absence.

I can't give you a simple answer on splitting up territories. I just started with a map and had at it. Later during testing we added a few more to get historical effects right.
We are trying to get the game finished sometime this summer after WitP ships. That's as much as I can say. Ask again in two months after we've had some testers give it a shakedown.

Interesting. I've always wondered whether territory characteristics were purely arbitrary or based on some kind of formula. It's a relevent question because the size of territories and the borders they share with other territories has an enormous impact on the game.
In the WAW screenshots, for example, it shows France divided into three territories, which I assume means that it will take the Germans at least two to three turns (6 to 9 months) to conquer. One could argue that this is historically inaccurate since France was actually eaten up in six weeks.
But then again, once France is conquered (an inevitibility of course) one could argue that it should take the allies longer to liberate it than it took the Germans to occupy it . . .. Just thinking out loud. Thanks for the response.
One more question while I'm at it--will each territory have conquerable resources, as in HOI?

Not all territories have resources, but the majority do (either population, resources, or factories).
France falls in one turn. Remember armor can move 2. When Paris falls, Vichy is declared.
