Retiring or Repairing ships in Dynamic Campaign?

I was wondering if it was possible to allow the player to retire or make hull repairs to capital ships during the course of a dynamic campaign?
I know the campaigns do not run for long, so I suppose any major repairs are out of the question, however being forced to nurse a 5% frigate around or, worse, being shoved into the 9% destroyer you got smashed up in the previous battle, is not nice since in reality such damaged ships would be withdrawn.
Obviously the enemy should still get points for the damage dealt to it, but less than what they would have received had they blown it up.
Also will the AI ever retreat ships that are taking a beating from combat?
Every game I play ends up as a slugfest and all the fiction you read (in general) has ships/units retreating, so it would be nice to be able to pull out/back if the battle is not going to so well
