My interest really is with Guns of August but as this is a game by Frank it has also started to interest me.

All reports Ive read on this forum are excellent (which bodes well for Guns of August) so Im really, really thinking of giving it a go.

Is the game good for a relative newbie? Do you get a feel for the Napolionic battles/era? The graphical quality looks superb, do the sound effects and to the atmosphere aswell?

Will there be any expansions like maybe Waterloo?

Im almost convinced but need maybe a little more incentive (so talk me into it).

The patch has made this a must get if you have interest in Napoleonic wars. The orders system was attracted me to the game (besides the era)-the delay and officer quality become critical elements in the strategic picture. Sometimes simulations feel "generic"-i.e. the game system could just as well be Vietnam as Napoleonic. That is absolutely not the case with this game. I am still not as clear as I need to be with some of the tactics, like using cavalry correctly, but I highly recommend the game now that the patch has addressed the big bugs.

I would add that, at least in the 1805 campaign, the risks Nappy ran are underlined. If the Austrians maneuver to the southeast and disrupt French concentration, the Russians could prove to be a decisive threat. Austerlitz was close as it was. A few more French divisions being tired and the end could have been different.

I suspect that the 1815 campaign would be a bit of a non-event at this scale. Indeed from the French perspective they were engaged almost from the point they crossed the border.

Something more adventurous like the Spanish or Russian campaign would make better use of the game engine.
