short answer, no
Marky, have you tried loading your game on someone elses computer?
Also I wouldnt have thought that you would have had to buy a new game if you have a faulty disk.
Might be worth while checking out the master slave relationship between the disk drive that someone else noted before as well.

If you have a faulty disk, then a replacement should be free.
Send it back to Matrix

Yank your writable CD drive and keep only the basic CD-ROM drive. Re-install it so that it's your only, and primary, drive. UV should install and play like a champ.

Hi, I thought when people had a problem with UV not running in their CD (machines with 2 CD's) all they had to do was put the UV disk in the other CD player.

Hi, If you only have 1 CD drive then it does not apply. There was a problem where computers with 2 CD drives would not run the game. Then it was found all you had to do was put the CD in the other drive and it worked.
Are you trying to start the program by going into the UV folder and clicking the exe file. (The icon with the white star on the blue back ground)

Yep, for me I have a CD-R drive (drive E:) and a CD drive (drive F:). Ever since one of the versions 2.X (I dont recall exactly when it happened) came along UV will only start in my first drive (the CD-R drive E:). It is not that the game can not recognize the model drive I have as my drive F:, since that was the only one I had when I originally installed the game. My first guess was that the game was now only recognizing the first of two CD drives in your setup. After reading these posts, my present guess is that it recognizes only the master CD drive when you have two (or more).

Do you know someone near you with a computer? If so try to load the game on their computer and see if it works. If it does, then it is not the disk and probably something to do with your computer setup.
As for the disk (if it is the disk), it doesnt hurt to try.
Also you said your brother in law was a computer guru. If all else fails send the disk to him and see if he can load it on his computer. Also he should know about the master slave stuff.
