Strafing With Primary Weps

I've been mucking around with a galactica mod in the demo, trying to get cylon fighters to attack Galactica with fixed lasers. I set the target filter thingy right, raised damage to 2000 to get them to think its worth it (I find this VERY annoying btw, but i'll live if it'll be fixed). The problem I have is that the fighters go in for a pass, start firing but then continue to fire as they're pulling up like they think they have to empty their guns. Sometimes the target they're firing at (which is carrier size) can be as much as 45 degs off Forward . Whether they fire or not depends more on distance than direction. Mmm - very pretty.. but these are not the srafing runs i'm looking for. Move along.
anyway i digress, Please dont ask me to trawl through the old posts as I still pay for my Tintin-net access.
Is there a trick to strafing runs? Can I edit attack run/ break distances like in Homeworld? Do the high damage values make the ai think they're packing homing Tactical nukes? and finally - When Will I get some sleep?
heres part of the altered def file if that's useful
