Anyone else ever wondered this???

Just as a general rule, the Japanese preferred to preserve all their carrier-borne attack planes for the strike role, so they entrusted scouting duties to cruiser aircraft. This has the attraction of a high-degree of refinement and specialization. In contrast, the Americans preferred thinning their strike waves in favor of well-armed scouts that could, after raising the alarm, make attacks of their own. Just off the top of my head, I'd say the Pacific War vindicated the US choice. American carrier ops were all about throwing haymakers and getting in the first blow. The Japanese stressed coordination.

Not to mention I think in UV anyway I have seen VALs doing searches... same as an SBD does... So I suspect the ability is there to follow the "american" approach like Tiornu suggests...

As to whether it's in WiTP? Couldnt say for certain... But judging by the similarities of game engine? I suspect it's there

Spicificaly the C6N.

Francillon, says it was common practice for the Japanese to asigne a number of Torpedo bombers to Patrole and search mishions, and since they had the Better radios basicaly of the same type used in the Float plaens this would seam the logical choice. (The Vals had good sets as well).

News to me. Mogami is working on some fancy "Paul's" for the BB conversions, but I am not aware of anything other then that.

C6N, I though someone said it was in the Data base, see my edited post above.

BTW the Tabby, L2D3, get in the game?

Myrt is in the database but it is a recon aircraft.

Tabby is not although Mog is doing his own version of the main campaign with some tweeks to make up for some stuff.

I believe the first production run of DY4 "Judy" prototypes were deployed on the Zuikaku, Shokaku and Soryu as high speed recon planes in early 42. IIRC the Sho and Zui had 4 each and the Soryu just 2.

As stated, the IJN used its floatplanes for strike recon and scouting to preserve their strike a/c. When floatplanes became vulnerable they adpated the first D4Y-1 run, which failed tests as dive bombers into fast recon, D4Y-1C. As also stated, they were used as such from the Battle of Midway, where 2 were aboard Soryu. In addition, the IJN used the B5N2 for recon, as it had greater range and a three man crew with a better radio than the D3A. The C6N1 appeared at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in Jun '44.
