Admiral Disappearing from TF with 0 sunk

During my recent battle with Condor (see AAR thread...shameless plug..[:)])
one of my carrier TF's was hit hard and one CV broke off into the obligatory cripple group. The other 3 were still operational and I accessed that group to find a captain of one of the carriers commanding. I then went to the damaged CV to find the captain of the Zuikaku commanding that one. Admiral Ozawa had disappeared! Later in the turn, I formed a new TF in Rabaul and found Ozawa available there to be assigned!

In the AAR I joked that he had commandeered a Kate and flew back to Rabaul to save his skin (he IS cautious afterall!) as he was scared that his TF was about to be blasted out from under him. Seriously, has anyone seen this type of thing occur? In addition, we have had disappearing units on both sides and my airgroups are morphing in size, changing their maximum allotments of planes (which is not neccessarily a bad thing, just unexpected)

Any input/ideas would be appreciated.

This happens frequently when a TF is hit in battle (any type) and is then split into several TF. The admiral in charge will command none of the subsequent TF, even if only 2 of the 25 ships get split up.

Things not always finish like that, so it may be that only if the flagship splits from the TF is the admiral returned to the pool.
