Why is it that APDs on fast transport have a deadly tendency to sometimes stick around in their destination port in broad daylight ?

Any chance you have them set to "Patrol - Do not retire". That would be rather unhealthy for them.

Other than that, they -should- be withdrawing from their destination before the sun comes up.

I think this is a known bug, where if they deem the location "safe" they hang around. It has been mentioned before. Somebody a little more in the know can confirm this?

Another possibility is their ops point use. Just a thought.

Or possibly an overly aggressive Admiral/officer in charge.

its to do with there speed being too low to allow them the fast run in that DD's get, so yes its to do with op points

If the base is in range of a night high speed run, any FT TF will be gone at dawn and far from danger, if their orders are 'retire'

If the base is not in range and the FT may arrive here during the day movement phase, they will only wait the next evening if :
_ their orders are 'retire' AND there is no fighter (even grounded, even in a closed field) in the target hex
_ their orders are 'retire' AND the target hex is an enemy one

Which is sort of a bug in my book. I just want them to get in and get out in all cases when I have retire set. Sometimes the just linger. Seems more of a problem with Japanese FT.

Last game as IJN, tried slipping in 4 APB's with elements of a baseforce, BF delivered but TF decided to stay around for breakfast. Not good! SDB's found them and only one escaped(H damage).

Now playing as Allies and I am hestitant to send USN APB's into contested waters.

Not really a bug, as they will retire after loading troops anyway. It's just that they arrive in day phase rather than during the night, and so may be bombed/torpedoed by enemy planes.

Rather frustating I agree but there are some ways to be sure your FT TF will not stay at dawn in the target hex. Count the number of hex between the home port and the target. It should be inferior to the combat speed of the TF or between 2 and 3 times the combat speed.

For example a CA/DD FT TF from Cairns to PM is between 1 and 2 times the combat speed and so FT TF wil arrive during the day if fighters are here. If you put a slow vessel with them (and then spilt it at the end of the turn), they will arrive at night. Or you can base them in Townsville, and then distance will be between 2 and 3 times the combat speed. And so they will arrive at night too.

Admiral - another wee gem gleaned - thank you sir. I hate that bug and am with crsutton - i'd rather they just did what I told them.

I think as a commander point of view I would like to be able to tell my TF this base is dangerous and this base is not. Dangerous base should be vacated at dawn by all TF with retire orders, other may be reached by TF during day phases.

But with the rules I give, you have to take some more time to calculate things but you may save most of your FT TF.

I tested this and put APDs in a bombardment TF - it didnt retire.

Then i loaded a save game from the day before, removed the APDs from the TF, and it did retire at dawn.

Removing the APDs didn't make the TF faster, since it still had the 19-knot Colorado.
