I am playing the long scen from Spooky's site with the historical Midway outcome <now maybe I can beat those damned Japanese once! Just ONCE BY GOD!> ...oh...sorry...

1.) Anyway, I have noticed that my some of my US destroyers and other craft are not rearming with torps and DC when they head bach to Neumea. Whats the deal? I have tried leaving them in port for a day, even disbanding the TF first and still they will be sitting there with one rack of torp lauchers loaded and the other empty.

2.) Second, different yet similiar question. Some of these same ships (and others that have full ammo) have some weapon systems that show in read. I.E. they are not functioning. Yet these ships have suffered no damage. Are these enabled via upgrade later or what? If this is the case how do I get the "upgrade"?

3.) If I set my lt bombers/fighter bombers to 100 ft do they drop bombs at all or JUST strafe?

4). Lastly (and VERY IMPORTANT) I seem to be unable to get replacements for my carrier borne aircraft. What do I have to do to get my loses replaced. I checked my intell report and it shows loads of Wildcats in my replacement pool (for example).

1 & 2 I think you are using the "old" version of the scenario as that was the problem I was encountering with this scenario. Black Cat has kindly revised the scenario now for 2.30 and, as far as I can see, so far those problems have been addressed and are not reoccuring.

3. I know that with FB's set at 100ft they do drop bombs as well.

4. I'm not too sure on the correct formula used but the carriers I think need to be withing range of Noumea and there needs to be about 1.5 times the amount of aircraft to be replaced in the pool (Hope that makes sense!)

I think Sabreman covered your gameplay questions, the new Midway Version 2.30.1 Beta is up at Spooky`s new site ( above ) and hopefully it fixes those problems.

Even with the reduced to historical number of CV`s, and the ajustments in the experience and morale levels to both sides, the Japanese AI is still very tough to beat, or even draw, in a Coral Sea type stand up CV vs CV fight.

Some reasons:

1: They still have 1 extra CV.

2. They still have a very high rating to the Zero fighters & pilots and usually keep a 26-30 plane CAP up...hard for the SBD`s to get through.

3. The US CV`s tend to launch in small strike packages, and get chewed up by the CAP on the way in.

4. The Japanese surface ship AA "seems" way to effective, although I haven`t changed that as we get get into the Campaign hopefully I can get feedback on it.

5. The Japanese launch one large strike , with a strong escort.

6.They can launch at much longer range, so the US TBD`s are useless

There are several tactics you can use, one is to try and move your US CV`s as to draw the Jap CV`s into range of the Port Morseby LBA set at Naval Attack, and/or use the PM Fighters as LR Cap for the US CV`s. This is a little Gamey, but often works. Be aware that with some of the high rated US CV leaders you will get a reaction move even though you toggled it off in the TF box.[:'(] In fact *sometimes* a US reaction move is not a bad thing as it closes the range and gets the TBD`s into play.

As a rule though I keep it off, and never go North of Gili Gili or North West of Lunga in the early Game.

One US tactic is at turn 1 head toward Lunga with the US CV`s, launch *one day`s * worth of strikes at the Jap ships landing troops on Lunga, then head due south about 10-12 hexes. Usually this will draw the Jap CV`s to North of Lunga. ( unless they are at Lae [8D] )

Then head West, and try and strike the Jap transports landing troops at Gili Gili, you may sink most, or all, perhaps before they land. At this point you need to decide if you even want a Carrier battle, if so try and get the Jap CV`s to come South of Gili Gili.

As for tactics, well to tell you the truth I have only played the game about 6-10 times and this is only the second game in the last year. But, from what I have browsed on these forums I don't think I follow the "standard" tactics around here when I play as the Americans. And (at least against the AI) I am pretty successful if I say so myself.

I decided long ago that any thing like a historical Coral Sea engagement in the same time frame as it happend in reality is near impossible.

So, I make sure I get troops on the ground in Tuligi, the canal, buna and Gili gili before the Japanese AI gets there. As many as possible. Supplies are secondary. Rarely do I lose one of these bases. I have yet to lose more than one. I also tend to split my two carriers up with minimal DD support. The rest of my suface stuff goes into fast transport/intercept missions (see above). Subs also mine and patrol the crap out of these ports early on.

Then one carrier goes south of Gili Gili and the other carrier goes south of the 'canal and LOTS of naval search from EVERYWHERE (PBYs in Tuligi and GG help a TON) I simply retire the CV TF that the Japanese are threatening and push forward on the other side... Rinse, repeat... Until I have secured these bases, bled the poor Jap transports dry and eventually have the advantage in aircraft and ships.

If I am careful this seems to work a vast majority of the time against the AI... Now, a human would simply spilt his Jap CVs up and chase me down and there the game would really begin... But, I'm too much a coward to play a human!

I agree with you on your aggressive approach with the AI
I also have tried this within PBEM games and against some
of these experienced players you will not hold gilli gilli for the
most part or lunga for that matter.
But on the flip side if you are aggressive enough you can
hold out and stall the IJN long enough to avoid the auto victory
and cause a lot of damage to his shipping.
I have recently tried playing an allied buildup action in several PBEM games and I don't like it to much as it tends to box you in somewhat against decent players
and they make you pay in return. ( but I am still learning the game )
after a year and a half of play.

Play PBEM, it is the best way to enjoy this game as you will never predict whats up next
like against the AI.
