Video Card Problem

I was having regular crashes on my PC while running WitP but they were at very varied times. I would only get a message saying something to the effect about windows has detected a device failure and to save what you were doing and reboot. But by that time my video was corrupted and I pretty much lost control of the PC. Had to turn it off and on.

I read about all the sound card problems and I noticed that a few were Creative Labs AWE 64 cards. I'm running XP so there are no more updates for an AWE64 card. I have a Soyo MoBo with onboard ACS97 sound. I removed the Creative Labs drivers in my Sys Manager, removed the AWE64 card, went into the BIOS and enabled the onboard ACS.

I still have regular crashes but maybe it's related to my video card. The crash can happen anytime. It starts out as no response with a mouse click but the mouse can still be moved. The screen stays frozen for about 10 seconds and then I get the device failure message and I'm thrown back to 640x480 with 4 colors. WitP is still running and I can close it with the task manager. Then I reboot to get back to normal mode.

I've had no other problems with any other gamesincluding 3D first person shooters. This same setup ran UV perfectly.

I've got an AMD 1.2 GHz Athlon on a SOYO K7VTA-B, 1.5Gbyte Memory
My video card is an ATI 8500LE with the latest Catlyst drivers. Win XP is up to date including DX9.0b

Just for the heck of it I renamed the sound folder to OLDSOUND but the same thing happens.

Any ideas are welcomed.

I forgot to mention that I also removed and reloaded WitP just to see if the first load might have gotten corrupted.
