What should I convert, and how many?

I know that on Turn One I need to start my conversions of AK's to AR's and AV's and such. Ditto gunboats to PT boat tenders and such.
But...how many of what do you recommend converting, and to what?

Strategy tip ...
Some MLE's are a good thing to have.
Japan is short on AR ships in a big way.
Rest is up to you [;)]

IOW, "no advice for you," eh?

Seriously, it's really a function of how aggressive you play. I kick out enough AR's to have 2 size 10 ports running with maximum bonuses (thats 7 ships as you have 1 - Japan).
The other types of ships, well, you have quite a few ... if you don't loose them, you don't need more of them [;)]
The MLE is the exception being a unique ship that you have none of. Without it, the only source for mines is a size 9 port. You have to think where you are going to be in half a year or so and guess your needs. If you are not a mine happy type, a couple will do you fine. If on the other hand you are sloppy, you'll loose these slow ships and need replacements. I can't tell you what your play style is so I can't recommend how many to make.

does not the number of ML ships has an effect of how many MLE I nned to have ?
Just asking becasue I think I am gonna have 6-10 Mine laying capable ships aviable, so I only need 5 MLE or so ?
I assume that I can lay mines only with ML ships. ( ? )
Thank you

Nope, the MLE simply adds mine handling abilities to a smaller port. No relationship to the number of ML's

Well, I like mines a lot, so definitely some MLE's for me. How many PT boat tenders will I probably need?

I think it is a grave design error that only the Allied side can convert AK ships to AD (destroyer tenders). AD ships allow you to resupply torpedoes and since the Japanese doctrine centered around the torpedo I would think this would be a conversion they would be doing a lot of.

I'm still concerned that the mass construction of MLEs and MSW respawning will turn the game into a minefest.[X(]

It's already bad enough that torps can be reloaded in most ports in the game. With all gun ammo being available in any port with supply, naval logistics are all but ignored in the game. As such, I don't see having this restriction as being a "grave design error." Personally, I did not realize Japan was restricted from doing this and wonder why.

ups, i didnt explained myself good enough.
I meant in general, MLE ships are a waste of time/money if you dont have suffuicient customers ( the ML ships ) for them. example : you have 4 ML type ships and you dont get anymore for the game, it is useless to have more MLE ships then ML ships- I hope this makes it clear.
secvond question : only ML & DML ships are capable to lay mines ?
thank you !

I also think many people will go overboard creating fleets of MLEs [:D]. Also can you still replenish 16" shells at a size 1 port?

Yepper but I believe this is for the AI to behave correctly.

How the heck do you convert AKs as you are describing?[&o] I've tried to find it in the manual and tried different ways in the game, but don't see what you need to do to convert AK's.[:@] I'm playing Japan so maybe that is part of the problem.
thanks,
Doug

As Japan go to Osaka, look at ships in port select any 7000 AK and on the ships detail screen you will see a 5 button list of options of what the AK can be converted to. Select the type you want to select and the ship is removed from the game and will return in 180 days as what you ordered it changed to.

One AR just wasn't going to do the job.[:)]

Definitely agree. It would have been nice to have different levels of complexity in the logistics system, especially for major types of supply.

Having more detailed supply rules is a seperate issue. I could be happy with that but I suspect it would cripple the AI.
I just think it is wrong that the Japanese wouldn't have the ability to make ships that reload torpedoes when torpedoes were such an integral part of their battle doctrine. Even the US can make ships that reload torpedoes and torpedoes are kind of an afterthought to the battle doctirne of the US by the time of WW2. Heck, they even removed torpedoes from their CAs.
I hope 2by3 adds AD to the type of ships that Japan can convert their AK to.
