Yet another question from a beginner! Does AAA from ground units in a hex with a port help defend ships that are docked there? Or does it only defend the airfield and port itself? Simple question but with big consequences! Anybody?

Triple A in base hexes will defend ships that "anchored" in the port; i.e. ships that are accessed by the "ships in port" button on the base screen. The base AAA does not help defend ships that are in a TF in the base hex.

Ships anchored in port will also fire if the port is attacked, but not if a TF is attacked. In this last case, only the TF's guns are used.

SHips docked in a port will also no replace AA shells used, so you have to create a TF, refuel and disband it regularly or they will cease to fire....
