Say I want a battalion and companies to defend a certian are, but I want to place the companies instaed of the HQ. This means I have to detach the companies from the HQ even though I want the HQ to run the defence with its support teams.

Once detached even though the companies arent to far from the HQ does it mean they lose the HQ bonus?

One way is to, as you say, give the coys individual defend orders, which detaches them from the HQ. Treat the HQ as a separate coy and place it with a "defend" order too. Place e.g. mortar platoons with a "move" order - if you tell them to defend a position they will often move to a position that gives fire support to a location, not to the location itself.

Then, once the HQ is in place, give it a new "defend" order but "In Situ" formation. As the rifle coys take position, reattach them. They will inherit the new battalion order, and the "In Situ" formation will keep all the coys in place.

It's a bit involved but the only way to ensure coys go exactly where you want them. Depending on the battle I am sometimes loath to do this, as it seems 'wrong' for a corps level commander to get so involved, but if the forces are small I see no reason not to do so.

The 'in-situ' order is probably the best way to do it. I've found that the more I play the game the more I use it.

Two things to watch with "In Situ":

1.If you try to give the In Situ order BEFORE the companies are in position, they will freeze in place and not get to the right place. So let them get in position first.

2. Units with In Situ defend orders don't counterattack to reclaim their lost position, while units with other formations do. If you're used to units counterattacking, be aware that with In Situ, they don't. That can be a good thing, too.
