Perfect framerates inside the cockpit no matter whats on the screen. However, in the "orbit" view, everything seems to slowdown and get choppy, even with just a few ships on the screen.

Any ideas?

3.4 Intel Chip, Geforce 5950 video card, 512MB RAM, Win XP Pro. I'm running the game with the DirectX 7 option.

I don't know what would cause that, unless you're zoomed in on your ship and getting hit by 50 things at once. You can try disabling the grid in the options, that's the only thing that gets added going from cockpit to orbit views.
