love it but...(also a minor spoiler and politics)

So far I am enjoying the game, I like that going from fighters to capital ships is a natural progression. The capital ship command so far seems more like adding more detail and potential for micromanagement to an RTS type game rather than a full blown ship simulator, but that's a-ok with me.

The are a few things that I was wondering if anyone has come across, such as:
-in the destroy the starbase mission, I order my fighter group to destroy the starbase and they fire one salvo of AGM and that's it, they are out of the fight, they just fly around. 'OK' I say, no big deal I'll just destroy it myself, more points for me. Of course my agm missiles only do about 1-2 units of damage to the airfield, so it quickly devolves into about 15 strafing runs with cannons blazing. Finally, I destroy it, only to have my own fighter go down as well. [&:] no idea why, had 100 hull, more than half a tank of fuel, several km away from the blast). I have tried several times to no avail, there is no way to make it back to the ship in one piece. any ideas?

-also, I have noticed that even if you start from a save, it seems that your reputation precedes you. for example, after aforementioned mission wherein I destroyed the base and said base took me down with it, i was awarded (posthumously?) the rank of Lt. commander and all of the associated rights and responsibilities. Though I thought by going back to a previous save that I would lose my rank, this was not the case. I have found that my rank has been steadily increased, despite several failures in my missions. I feel like I may become president or something [:D]. Anyways, is this intentional?

-What is with the patrol missions where i go to a system, run through all the nav points and .....nothing? Am I missing something, like, say, the enemy?

Once again, despite the above, bravo on this game! Love the transition from fighter combat to capital ship control, love the political back story, love that i don't have to try and tweak every last facet of the video settings on my superfast computer to get it to run (X2 the Threat, anyone?) love that I have a 4 day weekend to really get into the game.

Rank and medals are kept seperate from campaigns.

Some targets are supposed to take more than one mission to take out. Technically the base should've launched fighters to drive you off, but their launch systems may have been too damaged or the they may have been out to lunch. Anyways, the splash damage from the base is what killed you, the radius in which ground bases do damage when they go down appears to be too high.

That was an odd decision to make rank/medals separate from campaign progress. Oh well, I guess it lets me fly capital ships sooner, though I still feel like I'm scamming my way into upper management.

The starbase mission is bizarre. If I am supposed to just lanch my agms and then head home, i wish it would just say so. I like the concept of that mission, I just wish it was implemented better, as there really seems to be a problem with the ai.

You can stick around and kill it with guns if you want to, but I'd rather just go back and get more AGMs. Four Thunderbolts with 6 Hammers apiece can take a starbase out in two strikes.

Because it's a dynamic campaign, you occasionally get missions where you don't encounter the enemy, I just think of them as routine missions, although the one I had where I had to escort a freighter that moved about the same speed as a glacier was a little wearing with nothing to shoot at.

also on missions where your supposed to destroy a specifc ship and its not there if you turn on "exec" mode (in a capship) it'll automagically point you right at it and begin heading for it.

When a starbase goes kaboom it takes everything within 30-35k or more with it.

The only time I survived is when I launched my salvo, turned around and took off - watched my wingmen fly in, finish the job, and turn into 3 puffs of smoke...
Not sure how far I was away, but it was over 40k.

I think if you get it down to 1 hull strength, go to 40-45k (max range), launch a few missiles, turn around and run away as fast as you can then you should survive.

Thats handy [:D]

Too bad there is no 'exec' in my fighter.
