You can screw around with your system fonts, but like I said ... Not really advised, the game is set the way it is from a font/panel sizing standpoint. Changes are very likely to cause all sorts of problems.

Subchaser, here's what I did and it made a world of difference. I don'y know why Matrix uses that font. You can even see how bad it is from the screen copies in the manual.

ORIGINAL: myros
ORIGINAL: Jamey

myros, can you explain how to change the font in the game? I didn't know you could do that.

Thanks.

Sorry was tired whe nI wrote the post and didnt say what I actualy did :)

Here's the font I modded for ingame use:

http://www.neuralstudios.com/work/newone.ttf

Right click and save as.

Ok here's the processes:

1. Open your main windows directory and go to the fonts folder.
2. Make a copy of the "times new roman" font and save it somewhere - this font isnt used much anymore but best to save a copy for reverting it back when you want to, or if you dont like the serif one.
3. Copy the font I uploaded into the windows/font folder - your done.

Cheers,
Myros

Do a forum search on "font" and you will see the whole thread.

Pappy,

I guess it depends on what OS you're using, but that method of changing fonts did not work for me.

I'm using Windows XP and here's what I did.

1. Grabbed a copy of the font you indicated (thanks for that!)

2. Saved a copy of Times New Roman (used actually as the standard font in word processors)

3. Went to Control Panel and Fonts and physically deleted Times New Roman Font

4. Still in CP, I installed the new font (File, Install New Font)

That was it. So far, the type is much more readable and as of yet I've had no problems with looks or crashes.

Thanks!

Alan,
I have XP as well and the first method worked for me. No crashes either after about 30 hours of play. Glad we now have two ways of doing this.

I just finished printing a color version of the manual and the original font that is used in WitP looks like crap when you print out the letter size manual. I'm talking specifically about the screenshots in the manual. I thought it was my printer but if you look at the PDF version of the letter size manual on a monitor - Yechhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Pappy,

It does look much better. In a few instances, I've noticed, the font does get pretty close to each other. I don't think they had any real choice in the matter, since there's so much information they had to pack into one window.

I've noticed the screenies in the manual. They aren't pretty. But I don't plan on printing the manual any time soon. Too much of a strain on the printer. Maybe I'll do it at work. :)

I just have the manual up and loaded on a second computer and refer to it that way.

Thanks again for the font tip. I think the lifespan on my eyes has increased at least 10 years. :)

I liked it but when I did a turn in UV, there was a lot of overprint. Too bad.

After install the font the screen was much easier to read , I don't need

There's very little overrun in WitP. As a matter of fact, if Matrix would just abbreviate a few selected words there would be no overrun.

Thank you , thank you. But the credit should go to Myros. I read his post on Friday and was I happy I did. Now if Matrix would just abbreviate a few words ...

I'd love to replace the font in the game, but I cannot rename Times New Roman as it is a default font for my foreign language software, as well as being an all-around useful font on its own right for correspondence.

What we really need is a patch from Matrix that recodes the game default font to a san-serif one (like "newone") without giving up anything in the process.

Prettyplease?

By the number of hits on this thread I would say that a lot of people would like to have a new font supported.

I ended up having to resort to the old font. For one, Outlook was screwed. The font was different (and I couldn't change it), causing some of the letters to be partly invisible. I was waiting for something like this to happen since a lot of programs use the font that was replaced.

It would be nice if Maxis did something about how it's hard to read the font. Again, with the amount of information displayed, I can see why it needs to be small. But small or not, the font in the game does appear hard to see, no matter its size.

Oh well, small problem, actually.
