Not so........ he missed the counter attack with its 4th DCR in May 40.....

But a great politician......

Always supported by Mr Churchill!!
Dismissed by US!!

The way he walked on the Champs Elysees on August 44 = like a Roman general victorious coming back in Rome......

Became a kind of legend........ at least in French history.....

Churchill said it best when speaking to DeGaulle...

Thanks for clearing up why they burned Joan of Arc

Aside from Napoleon, and wine, what else has France done for anyone.

His counterattacks with he 4 DRC failed because he was outnumbered and unsupported. He did the best that was possible under the circumstances.

It cannot be concluded from his record whether he was a good or bad general, he only fought one serious battle! Or what? He was a monumental statesman however, and this is what secured him his place in the history books.

It should be added that De Gaulle was an outspoken proponent for the use of armour as a mobile striking force ine the thirties. The French general staff did not give his ideas on the use of armour, any consideration. They considered armour to be mobile artillery at best.Heinz Guderian and the German generals knew that,in terms of theuse of tanks,De Gaulle knew what he was talking about.

regardless of his merits as a tactician, he was a man who did not give up and continued to be a thorn in the Allied command side until France was given its due share of the fighting. Of course the allies were soured by the resistance of the Vichy French but DeGaul was never in their group.

DeGaulle was more than a general, he was France, as he once paraphrased Napoleon. He had the sense to get France the hell out of Algeria and nearly paid for the decision with his life.

Was he a great general? He was symbol of French resistance, grandure and a pain in the *** . He was a great military-political leader but as to his qualities as a battlefield commander I'm afraid we'll never know. He was brave.

And like so many before and since him, he probably stayed in public life a decade longer than he should have.

Didnt french give the statue of liberty to US after they won their independence? I think it was quite nicely done.

Actually, the statue was about 100 years later celebrating the revolution and France's role in it. And he's right the successful intervention of the French fleet blocking the relief of Cornwallis at Yorktown and its landing of French troops to reinforce Washington at same played an important role in the Revolutionary victory. Interestingly, it was one of the very few naval victories of the French over the British.

Actually he also had the sence to get the French
OUT of Nato. Never has France been so right,
on such a decision.

Now, if we could just get the French to stay out...

You boys were desperate for some pride...

Scratch that really desperate if you fell back to DeGaulle.

While I consider him a much better politician than a general, I have to admit, it took guts to make the decision he did regarding Algerian independence.
