phillipines first!! japanese strategic approach

Has anyone ever tried to take the phillipines first with all assets available, thereafter taking on Malaya?
If yes, have the three japanese divisions advancing overland in addition to the tank unit and the three mixed brigades at Saigon have proven to be enough to keep the british troops in Malaya and Burma from linking up?
It would be a bad surprise for an allied player just having set up his perfect plan for the phillipines getting a fight with the jap Divisions 2, 16, 18, 5, 56, 4 in addition to what else is hanging around at Formosa.
