CAn someone who has the game give a run down on how the gameplays.
Is it just a shooter like Wing Commander, are there strategic elements etc etc.
Thanks
I ask this as it seems this game stands out amoung a company who usually goes for wargames, so Im thinking maybe there is more to the game than I realise.

"Shooter like Wing Commander" is tip of the iceberg.
If you'd like to play it like WC, albeit with 4 dynamic campaigns versus scripted missions, then this game is up your alley.
If you'd like to fly fighters like WC, but with realistic physics (in and out of atmosphere), then adjust the realism settings and this game is up your alley.
If you want to command a capital ship, then fly fighters until you make Lt. Cdr. Then this game is up your alley.
If you want to manage a carrier battle group, to include air tasking and homeworld-like tasking to other units, then this game is up your alley.
However, this game is not GalCiv or Starships Unlimited. If you want strategic or operational level interaction, try one of those.
Hope this helps.

Mad Gonzo said it well.
The game is basicly 3 games in one, four counting multi player.
1. FIghter pilot simulator. You can fly fighter based missions (single player, multiplayer and in the dynamic campaing) you fly your fighter in one of 3 different physics settings newtonic, relaxed (speed reduced newtonic physics ala Jumpgate) and arcade physics (ala wing commander and starwars games).
2. Command a capital ship. Flying cap ships is vastly different from fighters. You can get assigned to cap ship command after running just a few fighter missions. You can fly cap ships in all the different game modes including multiplayer. Cap ships are also subjected to the 3 different physics. Commanding a cap ship you do different things depending if its a carrier or a non-carrier cap ship. When commanding a cap ship you have to attend to things like damage controll and where on your enemy you aim (do you want to take out its guns, power plant, drive or shield first?).
3. Strategic command. As you progress through the game you can command squadrons of fighter and entire cap ship battle groups. This is very much like homeworld and you can play this way in all the game modes INCLUDING multiplayer.
Its a fantastic game and if you like wing commander...

check out my mod.
