Its a bug in the game that is being fixed with the next patch which may or may not come out tomorrow.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue or a different one, but I'm having large percentages of my fighters crash land into the carrier's landing bays. It seems to be much worse if the fighters go out of the main plane of the system on their mission. This is w/ the 4.01 patch. It's bad enough to make the CVBG command mode almost unplayable IMHO.

It's a different issue. Docking AI get messed up in 4.0.1, its better than it ever was in 4.0.2, though, which should be release _soon_?

Having just watched at least a dozen of my attack craft destroyed on landing I have to disagree, the landing doesn't seem to be any better than beofre, and if a bay is damaged it seems to guarantee the destruction of the landing craft even though I tried turning off power via engineering to the bay so they don't land in the damaged one but no luck.

It works for me. I'm not sure what your problem is. Are you turning? It's important to maintain stable attitude, a slight variation in the wrong direction can cause the AI to be angled too far up or down and collide with the bay.

I keep my velocity at zero and keep the helm on so I can keep an eye on the pitch to keep her level, it likes to move a couple degrees up or down seemingly on its own (could have something to do with me clicking and zooming all around in the F3 view mode, i did notice that sometimes i click things and end up changing my heading somehow). Also, I like to watch the fighters land since often I don't have much to do when I have downtime waiting for maintenence so I can launch more waves and the fighters seem to line up pretty well and they fly right into the bay but then they bounce backwards and explode as if they've hit an invisible wall.

If you double-click somewhere in helm mode your ship will set it's heading there.

Yeah. Try switching out of Helm mode if that's a problem.

I played more and the fighters were behaving themselves better except after awhile they all stack up behind the carrier and don't want to keep landing for some reason (my best guess is that the jerks who fly off and get damaged or run out of gas but look healthy say they're returning to base but they can't make it back to actually land). Also, I figured out what was messing up my pitch: whenever i go to engineering or sometimes the fighter screen I use the up/down arrows to scroll and so I changed the key settings so that I stay level.
