Carrier AI

Are the Carriers in custom missionas and Campaign mode using the same AI? During testing, custom mission carrier AIs seem much more aggressive.
Also, custom mission carrier AI lurvs LCAs. Stick a few in there and its all LCAs all the time baby!
My other theory is that the Campaign mode carriers have very few fighters available and tend to try to conserve them. For the most part my carriers, starbases, and stations field squadrons of good size... but, still.
Also I have a starbase exhibiting weird behavior. It launches a single patrol, then like 2-3 other flights that take off and begin landing immediately. Sometomes one of the flights goes to orbit and immediately back down.
Station7's (the Mil-Lab) fusion reactor is very vulnerable to ship death explosions. Just a note.
Also it'd be nice if the AI packaged Heavy Ship Strike against Destroyers and Frigates. Mainly because the attack craft rarely turn to engage fighters hounding them anyway without player intervention. *g*

Slightly off-topic here, but you just made me think of something. Wouldn't an AI EDITOR be a pretty cool tool to have in a game. The ability to custom design AI for various units in the game would be nothing short of awesome...

Yes it would. When we wait that, you could play around Rules of Engagement (~10 years old game and very hard get legal way).

I actually have ROE2, which is one of my all-time favorite games.

Wow, there's a blast from the past!
Did you link ROE up w/ Breach II for ship assaults?

As I said:
very hard get legal way
and illegal versions of those games are not possible link together. Would be fun though.
Suggestion

A suggestion; I thought i'd use the existing thread.
When a carrier executes a quantum-jump to flee an incoming cruiser, it should immediately being scrambling fighters on the far side with anti-ship loadouts, set to defend and on hold for five minutes, say, to provide a little "surprise" for anyone coming after them.

speaking of carrier AI. It kinda pissed me off. There is a destroyer launching missles at the carrier, and the isn't any responce. No heavy shipping strike, no extra fighters against enemy bombers, the carrier went down to 30% armor and no responce other then launching me for a "sweep" mission. Whoever is in command of that carrier needs to be shot.

Try the Home of the Underdogs (
http://www.the-underdogs.com ). They have ROE 1, ROE 2 and Breach 2 available for download.
BTW, The Chief underdog seems a pretty legal guy.

As I have understood it, they have removed files when someone has
asked nicely. But otherwise Underdogs is ware site.

Kind of. They like to term it "abandonware". Generally stuff there's noone to sue over.

Do you consider Freespace 2 as abandonware? I downloaded it, played bit, deleted it and bought game from shop. Now it is off-line.

Freespace 2 is open source now.

That mean game engine source code and that only. Game engine code don't include ship models, missions, movies, music etc.

*rubs eyes*
Why? What is the point of this contention?
The game had its source code released and its been up on Underdogs for quite some time and Volition and Interplay both knew about it, almost certainly.
It is abandonware for all practical reasons now that Interplay is crashing and burning.

You know that Bethesda purchased rights to Fallout 3 and possible sequels and Derek Smart has been threatening for the past week to license Freespace in some form, right? [:)]

Then I should better say she is a pretty legal girl.
On the other hand I do not think Underdogs is a warez site whatsoever. I recall a major showdown with some guys called the IDSA ( the videogames domain RIAA - judging from their lack of both finesse and wits ) some years ago. They tried to negotiate with the IDSA but were rebuffed and menaced with suing. Then they removed the downloads. That is not the *warez* attitude.
IMHO, I find to be pretty silly to prosecute someone who posts an elderly Sierra On Line AGI game from the late-eighties/early-nineties. Original copies can only be found on places like eBay ( maybe ) on absurdly high prices (law of offer and demand, I suppose). Maybe that happening was related to the fact that Vivendi (the multimedia domain Enron) acquired Sierra.
I find the Underdogs crew ( and their leader ) to be very inspiring. When it is feasible (death, vanishment or long ago dead companies), they contact original game author to request permission (and support) to publish the stuff on the web. There are very nicely written reviews about most of the games there.
If you are interested in videogames history, it is very interesting to discover Richard Garriot's or Chris Robert's progression - from their first simple "proof of concept" games to pearls like the Ultima VII ( both parts ) or the Wing Commander series. Or take a look at the Atomic Games' V for Victory series.
Miguel.

Many (most?) of those reviews are copy-paste from other game WWW-sites.
