Magic Questions

Hey everybody.

I have a question about texturing in Magic. See, I don't own/use 3DS Max or Rhino or anything like that, I use LightWave. So all the ship models for ym mod that were made with other programs have been exported to OBJ format for me to use. Unforuntately, they only have one surface. Thus, I can make a texture for either the top, right, back, whatever, but I can only APPLY one texture.

So I was wondering, rather than stealing a copy of the original modelling programs, and tracking down the original model files, is there any way to seperate the model into several surfaces easily? Like, a button to select only the polygons that are visible in the "Top" viewport, so only the very top layer is selected, and then I can seperate that as a surface?

Any way at all?

Thanks.

You mean, in Magic? The only real way is to select all the polys you DONT want to selected, add them to their own surface, and hide/lock them.

Okay then...is there a comman in Magic to just select the polys that are visible from a certain perspective?

For example, my ship is sort of built in two sections, on underneath and in front of the other. So, to select enough of the ship to get the top of the lower section, I have to select a LOT of the upper section. This isn't good because then it screws up my selection of other pieces and so on. I'm currently trying to select each poly individually, but it's slow.

So, is there a way to only select the polys that are visible from one viewport? Like all the top polys, all the right polys, all the back polys?

No. That's why you should hide all the polys you want to select.

...I can't hide JUST the polys I want to select. The way the model is built, I keep getting parts I don't want selected included with what I do want selected. This poses a bit of a problem, as you might imagine.

So, is there any other way to select polys than just either clicking, or using the lasso select that would serve my purposes better? Or any other suggestions?
