starting point and control issues

Running latest version of Starshatter.
Sometimes when I start a mission (mostly sweeps) I'm instantly warped to some random sector where there is no one else around.

Also, is there a better way to assign controls? It seems that sometimes when I assign a new key, "Num7" somehow gets the it, or something doesn't show up right on the "control" screen. Then I randomly fire a missile when I hit Shift or after finishing "AUTO" Overall the key assignment interface doesn't seem very efficient. Is there also a way to wipe everything to default keys?
I like having the "switch to mouse control mode thing" to Spacebar like Freelancer instead of the awkwardly-placed "~" and canceling its "secondary fire"
Also am I supposed to be able to look around in the cockpit in 1st POV? Shift + (Left, Right, Up, Down) doesn't seem to do anything.

But now that I'm done with the problems I've had with Starshatter, keep reading to see my praise if you like. This is my first post after all.
This is the sweetest space sim I have ever played, seen, heard of, etc. There is a lot of depth and it has so much potential... I'm dying to play it like I want to.
Its presentation (graphics, most interfaces) is sweet.
The Newtonian physics is ingenious and makes for spectacular fighter battles. I haven't had much upper-class ship time but again I'm waiting to advance in the game.
The atmospheric missions are also great too.
Plus I haven't looked at the SDK because that stuff seems to complicated for me, but I'd like to try it.
Honestly, this game may not have some sort of "Platinum" status or whatever... but you are truly underdogs that have my complete dedication.
There is so much more to Starshatter as well but I can't go on for eternity.

Thanks for making this awesome game!

I'm not sure about key assignments (as a last resort, renaming the relevant CFG file should work)

but you have to be in "Virtual Cockpit" mode for the POV shifts to work. That's Shift-F1. Nobody has made a ship with a virtual cockpit yet, AFAIK, though.

Speaking of control issues, is there a way for the game to detect my 5 button MS Intellimouse Optical? I want to assign the side buttons but the game doesn't detect them. I know games have problems with that if I don't run the tray app but it's running, point32.exe is in the processes.

Like saikocat, I can really see all the creamy goodness of this game, underneath all the minor technical problems. That's why I'm, er...complaining. SS is just 2 clicks from being an absolutely brilliant game. Squash the CTD's, a tweak here and there, and basta. [8D]

Not any more.

I got the side buttons to work. There is a thing in the XP tray app that allows individual settings for each program. While it's not as instinctive as setting the buttons in-game, it does work.
