Avoiding DD losses on Shore Bombardments

CD guns are really pasting my DD's! I wish I could tell the DD skippers to please leave the Bombardment to the heavies....but within in the game, what is the best way to avoid those losses?
For day bombardments when you have air superiority, basically Atoll busting, all I can think of is sail to the hex as surface combat, then split the BB's into a separate group to Bombard. Does that leave them vulnerable to any subs in that hex, or will the DD's protect them even in another TF?
For night bombardment missions, I don't have an idea on this one......do I just live with getting hits on my DD's?
Some help would be great, the repaid yards are filling up with DD's!

While the CDs seem to be having a field day, so do the bombardment happy players. Best way to not lose DDs is to use bombardment TFs as they were historically...few were actually used as they are and as frequently by players in this game. When they were used, usually during an invasion, the target had already been pasted a good deal by air bombardment.

Jeez Louise Sun Devil,
How many dang links did you save, the whole forum? You seem to have a link for every question that has been asked the last week.

I asked this same question a couple of weeks ago, plus there was some good stuff in other threads as well. Its a lot easier just posting some threads than it is retyping all this stuff. [:D]

I understand all that, but you seem to have an endless supply of links to every question. I have a total of 6 links saved, but they are from way back on production and such from Mogami during Beta. You are gonna mess around and fill your hard drive up eith links and not be able to play WITP.[:D]

Oh I do not save any links at all, when I see a question that I remeber reading, I just use the search forum and all my links come from there.

So you do what they do not want to do huh? You are way too nice. I use the heck out of the search utility. I only ask a
question when the topic is already going for clarification or if I just can not find it. Or if the manual confuses me (not hard to do).

You have to start small. Other people have asked me how to link to other threads, so maybe this will catch on, and other people will do it. Or people will get sick of me posting links all the time, and tell me to stop. Only time will tell. [8D]

Good question. And it is a bit more unique that the one's raised in the other threads linked above.
You would think the BBs (with their escort) could stand off shore and paster the port....unless the port had 14" guns like at Bataan. I'm guessing the only work around is to put the DDs in a spearate TF to go in as surface comabt to deal with subs, but use the BBs and CAs on bombardment.

Worr,
exactly, that has been mentioned before create a bombardment TF with BBs and CAs, and then have an escort TF with DDs than set it to follow the bombardment TF.

Careful there ... lets get the exact wording so people don't get escort confused with Escort.
Create a Bombardment TF, give it the destination.
Create a ASW TF (put your DD's here) and give it a follow TF (Bombardment) order.
End effect, BB's pummel destination, DD's keep subs unhappy.

Is the ASW effect the same as if the DDs were in the TF?
I wonder if the AI doesn't allow a sub to sneak between the TFs.
I think the original question was asked int he spirit of, "Hey this makes sense...let the DDs not close the range and stay with the BBs as THEY do bombardment."

There is a chance of the sub sneaking through, but the ASW TF puts a negative modifier on the odds of the sub doing anything.
Subs go out of their way avoid ASW TF's. Too high a risk for them to roll an attack it seems, and even if they do roll the attack, there is another roll to see if the ASW boys get to attack the sub before the sub can shoot. Add shallow water to the mix and subs are not going to do well.

Are you saying the BBs would be better off with the DDs with them?

Nope, they like DD's too [:D]
But ASW tf's tend to keep subs sunk or suppressed. You know where you are sending the BB's, so sweep the route.

That wasn't my question.
I'm guessing no one really knows for sure?

So what happens if your BB TF (without DDs so they don't commit suicide against the Guns of Navarone) and separate ASW TF run into a base and a balanced enemy Surface Combat TF intercepts them? Good night Irene! One or the other TF will get engaged separately (and will be at a severe disadvantage) while the other fails to support it (due to having to jiggle with the game mechanics to keep your DDs from impaling themselves on CDs which should not be this effective in the first place). Just does not work too well as is. Bombardment TFs should engage at the optimum range of the main units.

What he's saying is:
Puting the DDs with the BBs in the bombardment TF, the DDs are performing the same mission as the BBs. They're not screening per say.
Put the DDs in the ASW TF and have them follow the BBs and they will act as a screen.

Just pray you don't run into a surface combat TF.[;)]
