I'm horrid. Ground combat

I'm trying still to master the tutorial (fog of war on, etc., like a regular game). Playing as U.S., I land two Marine divisions on Saipan (two islands north of Guam) on or around 6/11/44. By 6/26/44, I'm still getting nowhere.
How do you take over islands, in general?
Just to dumb it down for me, how would you go about doing this???
Any help at all would be appreciated.

I'll have to try this again (I'm about 0-24 now!).

Don't forget, it can take weeks to secure an island, even a small one. In WWII, Iwo Jima took a month, you could probably walk across it in a day. There a no easy victories against a well dug in and supplied defender.

took me 18 days and about 12 tries and tons of reading and questions.
