CENTPAC Future Objective = Midway???

On the long scenario (16), CENTPAC HQ starts with Midway as Future Objective; that is, it should help on ground combat at Midway when the Japanese finally come, right?

But, Midway is 20 hexes away from CENTPAC HQ!! I thought a command HQ only affects a land unit if it has a Corps HQ and is at most at twice the command HQ radius - which should be 18 hexes.

So, can anyone imagine what's the deal on the scenario designer setting a Future Objective that is farther than more than twice the command HQ radius? Or isn't the Future Objective limited by distance?

Future Objection is unrelated to anything else.

It is simply saying that "I plan to use this unit at that location some time in the future and I'd like it to be as ready as possible for that purpose."

No Limits at all. You could set Karachi as a FO for troops at San Diego.

Hello Mr. Frag!

Oh... gotcha... or kinda...

If I set the 1st Marine Div objective as Tokyo and land it on Tokyo 100 days later, it will certainly get the future objective's bonuses - that's okay.

Now the 1st Marine is attached to CENTPAC, and I also have CENTPAC's future objective as Tokyo. I leave CENTPAC at Pearl Harbor; do you think it will give any future objective bonuses at all for the units that are landing in Tokyo? They are kinda half way across the world.

Your input is welcome! Thank you!

The Future Objective is *just* for that unit, not any units it happens to command.

When at the future objective and having 100 points, the unit actually trains and gets better.

It takes about 3 months to get to that 100% level so you really have to plan ahead. If your units going to be sitting somewhere for more then 3 months, it makes sense to not set it for somewhere else as it could be training instead.

Ah, got it, thanks.

So it doesn't matter at all what is the Future Objective of a rear-area HQ, right? Not like Mr. Kimmel (I kept him) will have any more bullets flying past his varanda at Pearl Harbor.

Thanks.

Are you saying that the unit has to be at the objective in order to train???

Yes ... I take it from your post you have units set to 100 sitting somewhere else? [:(]

Hey, Mr. Frag,

I'm having second thoughts on the issue about HQs having future objectives. The manual reads:

"There is also value obtained if a nearby HQ has Planning points accumulated towards the objective when combat takes place there."

Seems to indicate that it makes sense to have future objectives set for command HQs and also for Corps HQs - that is, assuming that "nearby" means within the HQ's command radius. That may not make sense for CENTPAC, as it is far from everything, but perhaps there is a point in setting SWPAC's future objective?

Any advise is welcome - don't want to spend my time setting future objectives rear area HQs that will not help anything.

Hey, Tanaka,

I just tested having a unit with 100 preparation points and a Future Objective somewhere else (in fact, on the other side of the map). Its xp grew steadilily:

8/09 xp=20
8/10 xp=21
8/11 xp=22
8/12 xp=22
8/13 xp=23

Looks like you don't really have to sit on the future objective, and it can be friendly or enemy - results were the same. Perhaps you will get faster training if you're sitting on the future objective? Didn't check that.

By the way, not many units can train that way, as the caps are quite low (45 for Chinese, for example). Perhaps you don't see improvement because you're capped already? Page 147 of the manual lists the cap.

Regards!
F.

Well if I set my units objective to Midway and they have to take Midway from the enemy first then they sure cant train at Midway until they have conquered the base.

You'll always train up to the basic country level defaults if memory serves. Thats not the same as going *above* the country level defaults and getting *good*.

Yep, there is a HQ bonus in there somewhere (other question) but if you are not going anywhere for months, it doesn't make sense to be prepped for something else.

Prep'd for where you are improves defence, it's not *just* an offensive bonus.

On the "hard" setting for AI as Allies), I am amusing myself by setting objectives for disrupted and retreating grounds units north of Singapore (these units are at 96% disruption and terible morale, just having retreated from Khota Baru..and are of course no threat to anyone). I have set a number of towns in French Indochina as my objective (Camranh Bay eg.). My hope is that the AI will garrison these bases with forces that might otherwise by used in offensive operation...plus if he tries to ship in reinforcements..he will have to transit sub traps.

I have set some garrison units in Hawaii to objectives in the Japanese owned Kuriles..to see if resources will be shifted away from more vital functions.

I'll let you know if it works. It did work in Pacwar. [:-]

Almost sad to say...setting dummy objectives seems to draw the AI's resources to the false objective. 2 days after setting Camranh Bay as ojective, there is a 2 CV battle group on station 2 hexes off Camranh Bay. [:(]
